2 ppl rescued off Ocean reef
Apparently 2 blokes were rescued about 33km's out from Ocean reef this morning. A wave swamped their 18 ftr and sank (20km's out) in about 3min . All they had were their life jackets, epirb went down with the boat, and were being swept out to sea. They had been in the water for about 2 1/2 hours before my mate heard their cries for help and rescued them. Got hold of sea rescue who came and airlifted them I believe. Happy for a happy ending.
Coincidence or what. For some reason yesterday, I went to see my mate at work, just popped in. While I was there he ask if I have any marks 30km off Ocean reef. He never fishes out of there so had none. I gave him a couple Ihad not fished in years.....
ps my mate only got 3 flathead
I will be waiting to see if there is any news tonight
cheers

Scary shit
good to hear they're OK.
I wonder how they were swomped by a wave 25kms out. It wasn't that rough was it?

Was thinking the same thing.
Was thinking the same thing. Swell is swell just about any boat will ride it out. Dying Nor easter so wouldn't think too much of a sea.

Was rough as guts early.
Was rough as guts early. Strong easterlies didn't look like much from the ramp but 25kms out was real sloppy. Most definitely not appropriate conditions for an 18 footer.

makes sense to have the epirb in a floating container on the deck so hopefully it can float free

very lucky
we went and picked them up from the boat that found them.
We had a report of the Epirb around 9.30am. After a while sigal was lost and not long enough to get a position. Wife had no idea where they went. Car & trailer where located at Mindarie. Due to conditions we presumed they had not gone far and searched from Ocean Reef to alkimos and up to 3 mile offshore. About 1 hour later got a call from a vessel that advised a vessel had just spoke to them who had picked them up. We met them about 12nm of Ocean Reef and took them back to Mindarie.
They did not tell any one where they were going. Radio was only 27mhz so no coverage that far out.
Vessel that picked them also only had 27mhz radio and no phone coverage.
You need to ensure you can contact someone if you get in trouble. Don't rely on the EPIRB
Also the EPIRB was activated and removed from craddle but was sucked back into the cabin as the boat went down. Boat sank in about 3 minutes.
Apparently they were drift fishing with sea achore attached to the bow but took a wave over the stern, he tried to get bilge pump going but took more water of the transom.

Some very important information can be taken out of this lucky escape, have a think about things before heading out fellas and make sure you've got your safety gear and actions organised in case things do go pearshaped.

Lucky they 'Had time to grab
Lucky they 'Had time to grab their life jackets?' Hmmm. Mines a slim fit cylinder activated one that goes on me when I'm out deep... Why take the chance of not being able to grab it?
it ain't a fashion contest out there...

Few questions
Glad to here all are ok, however pretty stupid on the skippers behalf.... 30 km off shore in a small old crap boat in average conditions. Is it just me or was this an accident waiting to happen? Need to know your limits, can't blame the epirb

I'm guessing he is referring
I'm guessing he is referring to the pics shown on the news. Showed a tired 70's model glass half cab powered by a similar vintage 2 stroke.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

does anyone know what type of
does anyone know what type of boat it was ? year motor etc ?
ppl have said it was old and crap ....by the pic. cant seem to find any info on this myself, but interested.
this was said: "Apparently they were drift fishing with sea achore attached to the bow but took a wave over the stern, he tried to get bilge pump going but took more water of the transom."
seems strange to me to have a sea anchor attached to bow and then take a wave over the stern.
but would really like some more info. anyone have any sort of reports etc ?

listened to one of the guys
listened to one of the guys on 6pr.
He said they got turned by some swell coming s/w and then the wave hit from the east. He did say the wave broke over the right hand bow - but maybe he ment the stern.
