We all love catching them but...

Dont we all love catching salmon, just admit it. Ive caught a few myself. I know everything beside the bait to use, the lures to use and techniques. I always over exagerate and use 28kg line with a 15kg leader + 3 ganged hooks with a pillie on the end, I caught a few with that rig but i got a feeling that there is something much better in the market that i could use to catch double my catch. i am mainly focused on what techniques to use but would also like to know the lures and baits to use. Will anyone help?

if you can see the salmon

if you can see the salmon around tie on a twisty, raider etc and give it shit! Try catching them on light tackle...its awesome fun!
Salmon will hit anything when they are on, poppers, plastics, HBs, metals

My set and forget rig for bait fishing is a simple paternoster with a ganged mulie on the top dropper and a surf popper on the lower one.....most times the surf popper will catch the salmon!!

+1 for that, but I have the popper on top and mulie on the bottom, got 14 of 16 salmon at yagerup on surf poppers. But my advice either buy GOOD ones so the hooks don't straighten/bend/snap, or make them yourself. I got the ones from k mart and after 6 fish they bent and one got bitten clean in half by a monster salmon in the shallows. So it does pay to use better quality sometimes.

Found using slices with trebles tend to lose heaps of fish when they jump. Also I found their mouths are very hard and cheap trebles bend out very easily. Remember to let the slice sink before cranking. Using hard bodies seem to be able to land more fish, maybe because of there are two sets of trebles. Good fun.

 the smiling jack lure ive

Thu, 2013-05-30 23:12

the smiling jack lure ive found a can cast it out a decent way, and salmon love it. cheap too

other wise the ricter plug, or just metal slice when the sea breaze is in or the schools are out a fair bit further,

if im stationary ill use paternoster with mulie,

definatly fish lighter then what your using, all my salmon have been on 12lb with a 40lb leader and ive never had any problems

guys i know will go lighter, but being LB i find its perfect for the wave surge or when the salmon knows how wide its shoulders are.

and lastly, polorised glasses definatly help!

Never caught a salmon on

Fri, 2013-05-31 10:24

Never caught a salmon on bait, infact I can't remember even trying to be honest.

Halco twisties are the way to go. (if there are bulk fish around change the treble to one strong single)

I burley the hell out of where ever I am and get the herring firing on 5-10 gram twisties, then start firing the 30-40 gram twisties out (will still by-catch herring on these)

My theory is, get the herring there, the salmon will come. And they do!

Guaranteed good fun, even if the salmon dont show.

Polarised glasses

Fri, 2013-05-31 14:09

Polarised glasses cut out the reflection off the water allowing you to see the fish clearly.

Even cheap sets work but not as well as some expensive ones.

Fri, 2013-05-31 17:47

I've had a day down in Albany me and my brother were just driving up ad down in the 4wd  with one set of polorised between us, we spotted a fish or small school every now and then, got out and cast into that general area and bang! Worked at least 66.666.% of time.

I just use the $20 servo specials, always have helped me, I always loose em so I'm yet to trust myself with pair of spotters
