Beer
And lots of it...Once you become numb to the cold staying awake becomes the problem or standing up.

Port or bourbon for me - beer
Port or bourbon for me - beer just makes my colder but only to the point where I can't feel anything anymore.
Other than that layered clothing with wind resistant outer layer and thermals in extreme cold.

Wankers
Some wankers did that half way out on the Carnarvon jetty a few years back. Ended up with an 80 metre hole and the whole outer end falling in to disrepair while waiting for funds to fill the gap.

haven't tried it myself but when I was in the army we were getting ready to go bush in the middle of winter in NSW , I caught my platoon Sgt putting on a pair a women's panty hose with the feet cut out of them under his greens I told him I hadn't seen any thing , he just said you are going to freeze out there I did freeze the next 7 days but he looked surprisingly warm , but I was always suss of him after that

Assuming it was windy,
Assuming it was windy, stopping the windchill is 80% of the battle. Anything that stops wind usually holds in heat very well also. Under that your normal trackies and a jacket should do.

Hand warmers
I spent some time doing night security work near the airport,
always seems cold at airports.. especially if you're unable to use gloves :(
these were suggested by an old friend who played lawn bowls
http://www.perthbowlscentre.com.au/products/86-sundry/192-hand-warmers
light the firestick in the tin, put tin in pocket and grab hold when your hands need warming
if you have warm hands, the rest isnt so bad

This , but use your tackle bag.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Stones Green Ginger wine
Or anything else liquid in a brown paper bag. That's for internal but for external must stop the chill factor from the wind. Overalls are good to pull on over ya normal clothes.

Fish in summer
Sit infront off woodfire in winter playing bass Fishing
.
I have thermals, shirt, Mountain design Polar fleece, and if the shit realy gets cold, a Toyota Team Europe Rally Snow jacket. Nothing gets through that sucker, but have only worn it twice in Oz.

Allways carry following in my "Go" bag
1 x glove liners
1 x beanie (polar fleece)
1 x neck sock (polar fleece)
If you are in a tee shirt and shorts, above items will still provide surprising level of warmth.
If your budget permits then I'd add a nanno puff jacket or similar, wear it underneath a shirt or jacket/shell (very popular with the boys deployed in Afganistan)
My experience with thermals is they are only good if your not planning on moving around, you can heat up pretty quick if you have them on and you have to unexpectedly move about.

I honestly just about died
I honestly just about died one day doing an all nighter in winter out on the tip of Busso jetty. No blanket, no sleepoing bag, shiverd all night, muscles were aching in by the time morning came around. Then it rained to ad insult to injury. As we walked off the jetty in the morning even the locals were saying " You guys didnt spend the night out here did ya" It was 0 degreis in Perth so who knows what it was on the jetty. In the minus i recon. Will never forget it hahahaha

Seems everyone has it their
Seems everyone has it their own way. 0 deg is pretty easy to dress for when you've had to dress for -20 standing around.
To keep yourself and your extremities warm, you need to warm your core. Putting 18 pairs of socks doesn't do much if your core is cold.
Layer up. Multiple layers mean easier fine tuning for heat regulation.
Stop the wind chill. You need a windproof shell of some sort if theres wind (preferably breathable!). Otherwise it doesn't matter. A waterproof shell helps if you're rained on too.
Beanies, gloves, scarves, booze all don't mean much if you haven't covered the three basics.
For thermals, if you can get them, go merino thermals. Something like the icebreaker 200's (the 260's have a different less hugging). Much better than polypros for various reasons including better heat regulation and moisture control. Not to much a problem if you're standing around, but merino socks are good too (less chance of your feet getting wet from sweat). Layer it with a 150 undershirt if you get really cold.
Next layer you want a warm thick jacket and pants (or a thin jacket) and next, your windproof layers. You'll be toasty all night. Gloves, beanie, scarf, etc you only need if you feel the cold directly, but you'll know I've you've got your core right if you don't feel cold anywhere but your exposed skin.
And for the record, alcohol doesn't actually warm you up, but it does make you feel better! For an extra kick, try a winter cider or warmed port or mulled wine in a thermos ;)
