200 hp 4 stroke, whats best?
Submitted by Red Dog 2412 on Wed, 2017-11-29 17:27
Looking at upgrading my old Johnson 175 hp Oceanpro 2 stroke for a new 4 stroke. Any advice on whats good or what to steer clear of? Thinking about Honda BF200 at the moment but would appreciate any feedback?

What boat? If transom weight
What boat?
If transom weight is a factor, coming from a 2-stroke to a 4-stroke then def have a look at the 4-cylinder 200hp Suzuki.

Honda is a good reliable engine but their technology is getting a bit old IMO.

If your gunna go a honda
If your gunna go a honda bf200 you should consider the bf225. Same 3.5l block but with vtec. They are a lovely engine, as good as any and probably better than most but are a fairly heavy engine too.7 year warranty as well but you'll never need it!

21 foot ally Bonito
Boat is a 21 foot ally bonito (2002) but not sure what the transom is rated at, will have to have a closer look and see if their is a compliance plate hidden some place.
Was thinking about the BF225 but not sure its worth spending an extra $2600 to gain 18kw? hoping to have enough power with the BF200 but still an option to consider I suppose.

You may not need 200
There can be a considerable weight saving going down a size with still more than good performance. Just as an examlple, the 150 Mercs are pushing 21 foot Reef Runners to 38-40 knots, and I'll bet they are a heavier hull than the ali one. With an engine weight of only 204kg. Put a 200 Yamaha on them, only 4 knots WOT more.probably down to weight difference on the transom. What will be the weight difference between your current motor and a new 200hp four-stroke?

Weight increase
The Honda BF200 would add 97kg on top, Mercury Verado 61kg, Yamaha F200x 52kg and Suzuki DF200ap 71kg. As i add 140kg every time I get on board I dont think the xtra 97kg would be such a big deal haha. At the moment the Honda is around $4k cheaper than the Yamaha & Suzuki however have not tried to screw the price down with those guys yet. The 7 year warranty gives me confidence with the Honda and probably more concerned about reliability over top end speed.

Ranmar means Merc 150
Ranmar means Merc 150 fourstroke (non Verado). Very strong engine that competes with the Yammy and Suzuki I4-200's.
Dont want to ruin your boats ride by hanging a heavy V6 fourstroke off a transom that was only designed for a lighter 2-stroke.

Yeah but that 140kg would
Yeah but that 140kg would sit close to the centre of gravity. 100 kilos extra on the transom can change a boats characteristics. If the extra weights not gunna upset the balance go for it.

easy test for this.
Get someone weighing about 80kg to stand right down the back of your current boat and see how that affects it off the mark, ease of keeping on the plane , ride, ability to keep it running nicely in a following sea without having to keep on and off the throttle. Or load some 20l containers of water down there, remembering that that weight is still not quite as far back as the motor. This obviously can't give you the effect of adding extra thrust with the bigger, heavier, motor, but will give some idea of the weight issue, or if there is even one. May not be.

Agreeing with Ranmar
100kg extra hanging off the transom will make a massive difference unless you move batteries or fuel foward.
i don't pretend to be an expert, but even moving my esky foward in my last boat made a big difference in ride and holeshot .
IMHO after a certain point, extra HP doesn't really make that much difference in small boats.....at some point correct prop choice can gain you that all important good performance from zero to ( say ) 30 kts.
I have never been able to work out why it's so important to be able to do 41.3 knots in absolute perfect conditions when that means nothing out on the big blue ( except maybe for that rare, flat calm day)
what I am getting at is like.....my motorcycle will indicate 235kph.....but I ride it almost all the time at way less than that.
Id rather have low down grunt that top speed any day.
but that's just me

I like a big engine.keeps the cruise rpms down where its not thrashing your engine and burning the least amount of fuel for those long trips
