21 Aug Quick Tuna Session

Went out for a fish and dive yesterday and saw a massive flock of birds working the surface as soon as we left the harbour. We drove through it five times with four double hook-ups results. Awesome fun. Even got my wife (who doesn't ever fish) to enjoy fighting some skipjack tuna to the boat. Skipjack are kind of like bonito back home in WA. We caught eight with the biggest three at 11lb, 13lb and 16lb. Imagine a 16lb bonito; it went hard. We also got one small yellow-fin tuna. After that we headed over to Ant Atoll for a dive. On the way to the dive site we trolled some hard bodies over a lump that we noticed the previous trip. First pass, bang, dog-tooth tuna. Three tuna species in about 40 minutes. Loved it.

Sounder Issues

Sun, 2010-08-22 12:09

Mate my boat's sounder is broken. I've got a new Furuno 585 and a 1kw transducer in a sea container due into Pohnpei on the 23rd of Sep. Once I wire that in, watch me go.....

mmm 585 with a 1kw tranny.

mmm 585 with a 1kw tranny. Fish will have no chance. Those dogs will be cruising around those sea mounts waiting for some metal.

Sea Mounts

Sun, 2010-08-22 17:06

I'm tipping that there are sea mounts over here that the locals don't even know about. There will be fish that have never seen a bait or a jig, and I can't wait.

Great report, soupy!

Sun, 2010-08-22 12:14

Nice pics and good to hear about your fishing adventures in another part of the world!

Funny you mention bonito...the dogtooth are actually the largest members of the bonito family! I'm also pretty sure that the skipjack tuna you are referring to are the same as the striped tuna many of us get in Perth waters, although the ones you're getting are about 3 to 4 times the size!

Thanks for the report, looking forward to your next one!

Nice one soupy, sure looks

Nice one soupy, sure looks like an awesome time. Not fun when the sounder craps it self. Last week was on my way out to the 300-400m mark and the screen died on the fcv 1150, was at the 200m mark. Not happy.

Thanks for a good report

Sounder Issues

Know how you feel. The boats sounder has been broken since I got here in January. Getting money out of the mob to buy a new one has been a mission. Hope you sorted yours out and it didn't cost too much.....
