LEIGHTON Holdings subsidiary Thiess and a Belgian company have jointly won a $260 million contract to develop a port in WA's North-West.

Thiess and Belgian company BESIX SA will design and develop a breakwater and materials offloading facility as part of the Chevron-operated Wheatstone liquefied natural gas project (LNG).

The contract is expected to create more than 300 jobs.

The majority of the new work will be based in Onslow - with at least 80 per cent of the contracted work taking place in Australia, Leighton said today.

``This partnership creates a new specialist marine capability to support the booming LNG sector and continues our involvement in the industry,'' said Thiess managing director Bruce Munro.

Work on the project is due to start this year.

Thiess is currently completing two contracts for Chevron on the Gorgon LNG Project at Barrow Island offshore from northern WA.

Going to the Mackies in July, so will be very pissed of if the ramp is shut.

Why are the closing it? only just been redone couple of years back.

Mackerel islands will lose a lot of business in the process.

Apparently a fair bit of dredging to do with the works happening there. Best speaking to Drew at Mackerels direct. I do know some event have had to be cancelled due to uncertainty of ramp access around those dates.

Ramp

Spoke to both Ashburton Shire and Department of Transport today, both have said that the ramp will not be closed, both parties said if any work needed doing it would be similar to when they worked on the ramp before(closed one side while they fixed the other). I'm pretty sure the ratepayers would be extremely upset if the ramp closed.

I was reading about Chevron's meeting with the locals and of all the issues raised 'the potential impacts of the Project on recreational fishing was the most frequently raised concern.'

Im going!!!

Thu, 2012-02-02 08:21

I am heading up there around April - May, once we finish in Morawa.  Should be a few years work for us.  We are doing the Earthworks for the 4000 man camp, all the main access roads, a few causeways out to the borrow pits and i believe we may also be doing some of the bulk earthworks for the plant site itself.  I cant wait!!!  Got my spot booked at the caravan park, so it will be me, the missus, the hound and the bub (once he/she pops out the june), in the caravan for the next few years.  Just have to find somewhere to put the boat and i will be in paradise!!

You'll have some fun there mate, I lived there for two years and had a ball. Bottom bouncing, shallow trolling, pelagic trolling, jigging, popping, spinning, spearing, cray snorkeling etc.

Be back there eventually to scratch the fishing itch. Probably won't be the sleepy fishing hollow though, all things change.

Thu, 2012-02-09 05:25

Had  a  good  yarn amongst  other karratha locals at work  the  other day most of which were born  and  bred here  or  done at least 10 to 30 years living in the northwest. The general consensus  is  that the  blowin fifo  populations up  north  should  be  banned  from  fishing through their employers  or at  least  pay  for  a  special fishing  license where by  the funds  generated  could  be reinvested  back  into  the fisheries  management  for  the area. Sounds  pretty  fair  to me! Blowins  are  up  here  to  work  not  have  a  holiday. :p

Yep, a couple years ago there was a contractor at work bragging that got 2 metery barras last night.  I asked where, what bait and what did you do with them...... his reply

I'm flying out tomorrow so I gave them away to guys in the camp.

There goes our bloody brood stock ya knob

I have also seen groups of guys, new to town out pillaging the mud crabs.  Do you need 15 bloody mud crabs when you get free food given to you in the camp????
