3D Printed Lures
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2021-03-01 15:19
Bought my son a 3D printer for his birthday and I can't believe how good this bit of kit is. He's keen to start making his own lures for salmon season with it so has anyone given 3D printed lures a crack and can offer advice on the hook/line attachment points? I was even thinking of knocking up some soft plastic molds
I've posted up some examples below for Scano who sent me pics of some examples he's knocked up.

Got the Ender 3 with glass
Got the Ender 3 with glass bed for just shy of $300. He's right into tech, coding and and art so this was the perfect combination of all three and I just had to bite the bullet on the price as a one off big birthday spend.

You are right seakem
One did take me 40 hours to print, but it's the mother of all marlin teasers and it used near on 2kg's of plastic.
I make it with skits and all, for $40. An equivalent in size and looks in a shop will set you back $300 +. It raises billfish that's for sure!!

Hey Jack Frost
Send me a pm with you number, and I'll sms you some pics lures I have made.
I've made heaps of good stickbaits, swim baits, Marin pusher heads, poppers.
Ran a couple of the home made marlin lures in exy last year and had 3 hits on them, so they work no dramas.
look up a site called thingiverse, they have heaps of free lure designs you can use.
just type in fishing lure in the search field and there will be plenty that come up. I even printed a stencil to spray paint scales on the side of the lures.
3D printers are really good for old school and hard to get car bits too. Things like sunvisor clips, console parts, badges etc etc.

Hey timboon
I have an anycubic i3 mega. Their about $350 delivered to your door off eBay. You have to use a software tool called Cura in order to get the gold from an STL to what they call a g code. Once you have done 1 or 2 it is easy as pie to make as many lures are you want. You need a laptop to scale the size of the lure you want to make, but again there's plenty of YouTube info to help get you started.
easiest way I found was to save whatever you want to print to an SD card. Then you can hit "print" on whatever you want when to leave home in the morning, then when you come home from work it should be all done and sitting there waiting for you to rip off the printer.
As I said, awesome for making teasers (trolling bird teasers) and even knife sheaths and stuff like that. Good if you have kids too because they will learn how to use them throughout their time at school as well.

Yep
I made some a couple of years ago and shared my info when Scano asked about them too, the shapes and designs you can come up with are limitless but I found they are a bit unreliable to use as a stickbait or lure to be stuck by a fish.
Where the printer stops and starts a new layer (a growth line) the model is actually pretty weak. I shock tested a couple in the backyard with some weights and they almost always completely shear off at a growth line.
I had planned on redesigning some to have an internal wire trace to take the impact of a strike rather than the body of the lure..... but it ended up in the too hard basket :P
Will try and post a picture of one I made.
I think Scano is on the money making teasers though, just wouldnt be too confident on the printed lure body taking the strike of a fish.
Cheers, Jase.

Hey big jevans, have you seen
Hey big jevans, have you seen printed lures that are done in half pieces ? full wire dropped in and then the two half bodies glued together. It is endless on the designs you can come up, rattle chambers, bib slots etc. The tech has come along way.

Yeah I've seen them, like mentioned above the "thingiverse" has a lot of models on it, I didnt dive too deep into different options, had a play and gave up haha

And yes
Have made some of the wire through 2 part glue together lures, came up great.
there's also a couple of marlin lures you can pause the printing mid way through and then add a descent size ball sinker in the head of it. They work great in close to the transom or in rough seas

Pause
Hey Scano can you program a pause into the design or is that part manual?

From what I have experienced
That part is manual. I mean I'm sure there are those that are more tech savvy than me which could get it to pause mid way automatically, but I did it manually.
