4000 size reel for beach and light boat
hey guys im just looking for some advice for a 4000 size spinning reel that i will most likely (unless anyone begs to differ) match it with a starlo stix 902 for beach fishing, including anything up to tailor and salmon. i will also pair it with a 5-10kg, and about 7 foot rod for light boat casting.
these are the reels ive looked at so far, the prices are ebay:
Penn Conquer CQR4000 - $190
Shimano Saragosa 4000F - $187
Shimano Stradic CI4 4000F - $210
Shimano Sustain 4000 FE + spare spool - $250
Shimano Thunnus CI4 4000 - $260
im not sure wether to run 20 or 30lb braid, if its got a spare spool i will have 10lb mono on that.
keen to hear any advice and experiences on these reels or if theres another reel out there around the same price that will be better.
cheers rob

Penn Conquer 2000 and 4000
Penn Conquer 2000 and 4000 are more rougher then 5000 7000 8000, not as smooth feeling and you can feel the gears when winding and noisier , but if you can look past that part of it, it will out perform a stradic no problems, but shimano has that 10 year warranty if you buy local so most take the shimano path and dont look back.
P.S was in bcf yesterday they had a shimano catana with 4000 solstace fi for $129 dont know 100% if its for the combo or just the rod but i honestly like the feel of the whole setup, go check it out cant go wrong for the price.

spare spool
some of those reels come with a spare spool. It may be better to pick one of them to give you more versatility.
any of those reels will do depends what you want to spent. I like the sustain with a sparey

Grab the sustain :) for that
Grab the sustain :) for that price (assuming online) It won't let you down, the spare spool will come in handy. I wouldn't part with my sustain for anything.

My Shorespin is matched to a Stradic 5000 FE with 20ld braid on it. Able to cast a mile with it and just love it.
I would go with a 5000 size Shimano as it the same size as a 4000 but has a deeper spool and the extra line capacity can be good.

If you were going to run 30lb
If you were going to run 30lb look at getting The Daiwa Tournement 8 Accu Depth braid, as its 50lb is thinner than normal 20lb :) Its quite pricey but worth it, plus you would most likely be able to find some cheaper online :)

That's always a consideration
but it wont help you if the thickness of the line reduces your cast to a point where you don't reach that rock

tough line
If the distance between casting 20lb braid and 50lb braid is that much then you should come down and get some casting lessons from the Surf Casting and Angling Club at Yokine reserve first sunday of every month.
Which braid???? everyone likes ther own. I dont like tough line but I dont rate alot of the really expensive braids either as your better off spending more money on other items. I use well priced reliable fins prt I usually buy online in bulk spools 1200 yards+ I have used fireline and power pro they seem pretty good 2

some more options?
thanks to everyone for your comments
ive found a shimano sustain 5000fe for the same price as the 4000 and only 38 grams heavier, would this be better off than the 4000?
any comments on the thunnus or is the baitrunner feature just a gimmick?
had a look at the daiwa options and came up with
TD tierra
TD Sol
Luvias
not sure on the sizes for these reels, with the different numbering system. any comments on these?
cheers rob

Its your choice
Its your choice, as you really have to feel the reels yourself before you go and buy one, i would reccomend getting the 5000 sustain, as it holds more line and is practiaclly the same physical size as the 4000. I think it may even pull more drag. As far a daiwa goes, the sol retails for about $300 and the 4000 would be a suitable size, as the daiwa sizing is larger then shimano. Both are really good reels, the sol may be smoother, but the shimano will probably last longer ;) Hope that helps mate :)

cheers guys,i will probably
cheers guys,
i will probably go with the sustain, havent played with one yet but looking in the shimano catalogue they dont do a 5000, neither does their website. yet i found a 5000 one on ebay. (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-Shimano-Sustain-5000-FE-Spinning-Reel-SA-5000FE-/120685637623?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c196caff7)
for comparing size would they be the same as a 5000 stradic? as i was in bcf looking for a sustain (but the manager said they dont stock them) and saw the 5000 stradic looked a better size compared to the 4000.

Agree on the sustain and
Agree on the sustain and agree on getting the 5000 size for the choices you put up. The online reel is from OS as for some strange reason it is not offered in Aus.
I personally believe however that a Twinpower 5000 FC would be a better reel for your purpose as I believe it has better corrosion resistance. It is also fully waterproof and I doubt you'll tell the difference in performance between it and the sustain.
