A lot of lows up north

Thu, 2013-01-17 06:15

That and a predicted low or TC to come near or cross the coast late next week. The left over swell from Narelle and not a high of any size in site its going to be an interesting weekend to watch unfold. If it comes good i think i will be somewhere north of perth but not quite gero

Weather forecast

Sun, 2013-01-20 11:40

Hi Paul

Which weather forecast are you monitoring?

I'm 99% ready...the boat's now got a 2nd underfloor fuel tank....120L capacity (to supplement the original that's supposed to be 180L) so that gets 6 jerry cans off the deck. Also installed a 2nd battery, isolator switch and a dual 12V outlet for the Engel. Just need to buy a camp stretcher to replace the swag on the deck and I'm good to go.

Trying to build a rack to house 6 dive tanks but I'm rapidly running out of time....working for a living sucks sometimes

Looking at FINN Gizmo kayaks but mrs gates won't let me spend any more money until I sell the inflatable.........anyone interested in it???

Will keep in touch.

Must remember to arrange for another 'out of season permit' for next weekend!

regards
rusty...

I'll let ya know if Im heading over, could be anywhere between thurs and whenever but will be watching a bit closer.

Mon, 2013-01-21 08:49

Sorry to hyjack your thread but was interested to know how much fuel and water you would need for a 3 to 4 day trip out to the Abrollos and are you allowed to camp overnight on the island. Sounds like a fantastic place. Cheers Nev

Mon, 2013-01-21 09:20

Hi Nev, that is a bit of a "piece of string question"-without knowing what boat, people etc? Basically its 32 odd miles to the nearest islands.

My old Trailcraft used about 110-130 litres for a 3 day trip covering about 90-100 miles

Rules are quite stringent and convoluted but basically

1/ No you cant camp on any islands except in a camp with the owner present

2/ You cant use a jetty unless you have written permission from owner, lodged at Fisheries and copy on board

3/ Possession limits are tighter

4/ There is no potable water available except by permission of a camp owner, or fuel unless you can get a camp owner to bring some over.

5/ Outside of Feb-July you need to lodge an "off season notification" at Fisheries Geraldton, and carry a copy onboard.

below is a link spelling it out

http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Documents/recreational_fishing/fhpa/abrolhos_islands_information_guide.pdf

hope this helps!

Permit sorted

Mon, 2013-01-21 12:36

Got my permit sorted...pick up the boat this arvo.

Nev, on our last trip i travelled 213 kms & used 198L of fuel (5.9m Trailblazer with 125 optimax)...took way too much stuff but that happens on ur first trip; will be better prepared for this one.

We camp on our boats & tie up 2 the public moorings dotted around the islands.

regards

rusty

Gday fellas

Thanks for the great info guys, the link to fisheries will be invaluable. Hope to get up there one day, I have a big enough boat (6.2 bc with 150 yam 4 st ) with all the gear as I go up north every year and often take too much gear also rusty. Nothing like being set up. Fuel wise I have 195ltr tank and a spare 25ltr in a dingy fuel tank which fits nicely in my kill tank as I use a big esky and dont use the kill tank. Do you guys take up a car fridge on the boat ( I have a waco80 and 3 batteries on board, 1 is spare ) and also do you need to take up one of those porta loos and would 40ltr of water be enough for 3 days. Thanks in advance.

Cheers Nev

toilets-Im not actually

Mon, 2013-01-21 18:11

toilets-Im not actually certain that a toilet is required, just about every camp has a drop toilet anyhow. Probably any new camp will require a composting one Id think.

Youd have plenty for a trip to the Sthn Group but of course it simply depends how long and how far!

I take a Waeco usually, and sometimes just fill it with block ice made in ice cream containers. Then just take them out as needed, I do this mainly to avoid getting dirty ice.

Abrolhos stuff

Mon, 2013-01-21 14:14

 Hi nev

my under floor tank holds 170L and i took 6 jerry cans on the deck. I've just had a 2nd under floor tank installed which holds 118L so that declutters my deck. Last trip i took 40L of water but only used 20.

The other guys had eskies & engels but I only had an esky...I've just installed a 2nd battery and an isolator so I will take an engel, too.

I have installed an Airhead composting toilet in my boat and it works really well...just need a little privacy as my boat is a cuddy cab.

regards

Wed, 2013-01-23 09:33

yeah it can be a hideous place when its windy, I always remember the sound of wind screaming through the shack walls when living over there.

Willyweathers forecast is a bit odd, compare Geraldton to Pelsaert Isl and they say a stronger southerly there than here which is unusual, generally whatever seabreeze there is is similar or less as you head offshore.

Im just watching as it gets closer, at this stage over sat morning, probably not at Pauls sparrow fart though! And stay til either tuesday, the kids get bored or the weather beats us!
