dinghy mods

was thinking about pulling the middle bench seat of of my savage 4.2 wide body. my neighbor has the same boat, but without the middle seat, and it looks a much more practical layout.

its only riveted in, so it would just be a case of taking out the rivets, and fillling the holes, but im not sure how much strength or lateral support it provides to the sides of the hull, or overall structure.

does anyone know whether a savage kestrel with 3 seats, is the same build as one with 2 seats? or whether removing this seat will compromise the structural strength of this hull?

I have the same tinny and I bought it without the middle seat, so I doubt it will be a problem.  Great fun little boat with heaps of room to walk around

I rekon take it out. much more room and can put in a full deck. If your worried about strength maybe weld a rib or two in the place of the seat.

As tou said its only riveted in so will be easily replaceable, just remember that all the floatations is in the seats.

If it is only rivited in,

If it is only rivited in, take it out and see how it goes, if it sucks, rivet it back in after insulating it and making it a pen for cold bushchooks.....Just a thought.

An awesome thought but.

I see there is a rib just in

Wed, 2013-01-23 18:00

I see there is a rib just in front of the bench, if there is one directly behind you'll have no problems.

If there isn't one there I would seriously consider putting one in.

I took the middle seat out

Wed, 2013-01-23 19:23

I took the middle seat out of a savage once.. Was an older boat though, I took it to my closest Ali welder and got him to put another rib in either side doesn't hurt, especially if u plan to do beach launching. Last thing u want, if u get caught out is for it to fold in half. I have made a few mods to the tinny I have. If u would like a couple ideas on something similar pm us

I think those bench seats are

I think those bench seats are fairly structural and it also hold the flotation. Bad idea to take it out.

bad idea I think

think it would be a bad idea to take the middle seat out as i'm sure you are going to loose a bit of structual integrity the seat contributes to the hull design

just my thoughts on the matter
