Advice on bait

hi there....just want an advice on selection of bait for mulloway.........live the is the way to go, but if you cant get access to live bait, what other bait is popular with mulloway.

Depends on where you target them

If you're fishing in river systems, use a bait that a mulloway is likely to prey on in the river. For instance, bony herring or even something as simple as a prawn! Likewise if you're fishing the surf - I like scalies as a dead bait.

well from my opinion havent seen or heard of any could be the dredging there not coming in (im no mulla expert) if you go to the narrows just cast a metal around plenty of fun on the choppers to be had even use one for bait

Live Tailor in the Swan

Live choppers are as good as anything and cheap as...LOL

In the surf I often catch them on Mullies while targeting Tailor. Specifically for Mulloway in the surf I like to use a fresh fillet of Tailor. Having said all of the above, a prawn will do... Mulloway are scavengers.

Oh I forgot....

When I was living in Sydney the greatest option there was a live Yellow Tail on a single large circle hook. Given that they exist here in the Swan then it stands to reason that that would be a great option to try for Swan Mulloway. One thing I did find for larger Mulloway with live bait (dead bait also) is that a decent bait-runner reel is a winner as the Mulloway will pick up and drop the baits on several occasions. It's like catching Bream really, you need to let them run before a strike.

Scaly

Scaly mackerel is a great dead bait and the right size for mullas, Swan River/Beach/Cockburn Sound.....its versatile.

caught plenty of mulloway on

Thu, 2010-10-28 17:52

caught plenty of mulloway on prawns targeting black bream in kalbarri river. Best mulloway on a piece of prawn was 9 kg. But most of my targetted mulloway come form tailor, either filleted or live, depending on size.
