Advice for beginner

G'Day all,

new to the forum , a good site by the looks I'm enjoying the topics , stories and the humour

I am a bloke who would be best described as a shite fisherman, as in can knock up a basic rig , chuck a mulie on and feed the tailor ect but I really want to teach my son (11) how to fish , to give him an alternative to XBox war games which will get him down the water and hopefully having fun.

I live in the Comet Bay area and want to have a go at the Yellowfin Whiting which are plentiful along secret harbour , golden bay ,singleton area

I know the bigger ones are difficult to catch but was wondering what people have had success with , rigs , baits or techniques so I can put it to practise. I have been told about "Gulp" fake sand worms and that they are supposed to be good ?

Thanks in advance and happy fishing

Cheers Gary

Can't go wrong with long

Can't go wrong with long shank hooks (size 1 or 2 from memory?), baits such as ox heart, prawns, squid. Light line (4kg or thereabouts) with a single hook or made up like a paternoster with 2/3 hooks on dropper loops and enough weight to drop the rig to the bottom. That's how I've gotten whiting before though I was actually chasing other stuff like herring at the time. Little bit of berely wouldn't go astray either. Don't need to cast out too far either as you can find them in pretty close to the shore.

Can't comment on about the Gulp sp's as I've never used them but hear they are pretty good. Got some smaller Nuclear Chickens I will try out at some point. People also like to chase whiting on poppers as well, which could be something different to try as well.

Heres two basic rigs that I

Heres two basic rigs that I use for whiting/ general bread and butter fish off the shore and the boat in the perth metro region. Ive found peeled fresh prawns (coral or river) to be one of the most productive baits for whiting and other bread and butter species. Just use small peices.

This is just a very basic running sinker rig, easy to teach the kids to tie, casts pretty well and doesnt get tangled too often. For perth metro i'd recomend using around 8-12lb leader, flurocarbon if possible, alternativley just use some clear  mono. If you are chasing hezzas or gardies you can replace the sinker with a berley cage or float. Use a sinker to match the condtiions, and where you are fishing. Most of the time a size 1 ball sinker should be ok, but if its really windy or you are off the beach you may have to use heavier. Alternativley if its very calm and you dont need to cast far use a lighter one.

This next rig is a basic patanoster rig, tied using two three-way swivels instead of dropper loops, as I find this is easier to teach people to tie. This rig is great for deeper areas, or off the beach where you need to cast far as you can use a bigger sinker. Works great for whiting.
