Yep good reddy spots US of Baden Powell. My tip hire a canoe from Dwellingup Adventures, strap to roof and head up to Stringers or somewhere more US and away from the rowdyness of Baden Powel. Use the canoe to fish the snags hard and recover snaged lures (this will happen). They love sneaky scorpion in redfin pattern, silver spinners, SP's, not really fussy. Oh and there could be trout also. They just love worms and yabbies beneath bubble floats. Get into em' mate.
No dramas on the licenec boggybay, just get an umbrella licence every year.
Wasnt planning on getting a canoe wrassinator, thought i might just bush bash it. Is it pretty thick??? Have been to baden powell before kayaking so you reckon stay on that side of the river and just follow it up stream?
Yeah mate a few goat tracks along river from Baden, but better of driving US to deeper pools and just fishing those from the canoe, makes it way easier to get those perfect angles for casting asnd reteiving. Watch the blackberry bushes ! I have lost plenty of lures up there over the years, then tried the canoe and it was sooo much better.
Headed down there before dawn today, was expecting there to be a few crew down there being the long weekend and all, but god damn it was like being in a caravan park and the road in and out of the lane poole reserve was like a hwy. Stopped at nanga falls to have a flick and in 30 mins i counted no less than 36 cars going along the road. Every campsite was chockers. Ended up only trying a few spots as nearly every section of river had screaming kids on canoes, kayaks, rafts or swimming.
One little spot i tried was good had about 8 good sized reddies coming up behind the lure, but wouldnt take. Tried every lure in my box but to no avail. Thought time to switch tactics. Got my little landing net and started to net some of the gambusia(minnows) swimming abouts. Chucked one of them on a tiny hook under a float and sent that out into the snag where the reddies were holed up. Instant success got one! Then let my girlfriend have a go. Repeated what i did and again instantly on. Her first freshwater fish! Was really cool watching this live gambusia about 3cm long under a float being chased around by about 6 good sized reddies and then getting smashed. Like watching salmon only smaller scale! After that one they got a bit spooked and went off the bite. Not suprising seeing that the pool was only about 10m across and 2m deep. Intresting to note this pool was a side pool off the main river and was only just connected by a stream about 1m wide and 10cm deep. Guess if the water drops anymore they're stuck in there till the next rains.
Overall though saw a few other reddies at other locations come up to the lure but to shy to take. Had a school of 10 x 2-3cm redies chase my lure at one pool. Good trip for me though, had a good recce at some really good looking spots which could even hold trout when the water is a bit high, cooler and when less people about i reckon. Though i reckon your right wrassinator a canoe would make it soooooo much easier, though bush bashing it will produce.
Nice technique produced the goods Buz. Top report mate. The old reddies are pretty tasty too. I have also had heaps of follows but no take at times....can b frustrating.
Not surprised about the crew up there, long weekend and all. Have heard crazy stories from rangers and Dwello locals over the years about the shenanigans out there.
Always next time for the canoe mate. Glad you got onto some freshies.
Good onya for effort also. I have never got on the water but I spent lots of time with a small telescopic rod walking the banks tossing diver lures. Lots of frustrations with vegetation but also caught some nice fish along the way. I have always had my best days catching minnows and using them as live bait. Any time of the day the reddies will go for them.
Yeah was at lane pool reserve i tried Chuditch day area and baden powell didnt see anything only little minnows. i was using lures and soft plastics. Prob saw none cause it was about 11am that i was there
