Alternative to paternoster rig

On occasions on the tele and in fishing pics I've seen people bottom bouncing with a ball or bean sinker sitting directly on top of a single hook.  Anyone use this style of rig?  Why do you use it?

Its called driftbaiting, nice way to get a big bait down in shallower waters with a more natural bait presentation.

Dhufish in particular love the driftbait squid presentation. Ryan wrote an article a while back and highlighted his catch rate of quality fish picked up bigtime and when the fish are fussy they'll take the driftbait over patternoster.

Pinksnapper/baldys/blackarse etc still go the rig, works well in waters to 50m and slower drifts.

We use 2 by 6/0 Mustad big red suicide hooks and have them snelled onto 90cm of 80-100lb Jinkai "plus" . We use a #5 bean sinker (max #6) and have that right onto the hooks but have a crimp approx 8 inches up from the hooks to stop the sinker from travelling up to the swivel (#4 ballbearing swivel)

Great way...

...to introduce kids to "deepsea" bottom fishing, since the lighter weights/tackle involved are much easier for them to handle than the standard paternoster/heavy snapper lead setup.

Driftbaiting using double-snelled 2/0's and a whole mulie is also very effective when targetting bigger KG's (45cm plus).

Drift baiting - my favourite

Drift baiting - my favourite way of targeting Dhuies and Baldies in under 40 metres.  Usually pick up the bigger fish in the school too!

Beats using heavy snapper weights and the fight is alot more enjoyable.

As Aus said, down scale for the KG's aswell.

Cheers Pete

Agreed some good info there

even more if you do a search on drift baiting.  Sounds like straylining but with a small weight.

I recall seeing some good reds being landed at Exmouth on such a rig in 50m+
