America... land of the ?
Submitted by Righteo on Mon, 2012-05-07 21:47
I just spoke to my old man who is spending 2 weeks in the big apple, of course he was on the look out for some fishing gear but after just speaking to him i wonder... exchange rate 1us$ = 92AUc? I thought buying through paypal and banks taking their % was bad enough (losing between 2 and 4c per transaction) but what a joke.
Its cheaper to buy from your computer than to travel to the states and buy first hand.
God bless you America.

Mate it is cheaper there
but definately NOT in New York. A couple of coffees and a few sandwiches cost us near on $70 bucks in the apple. The only cheap things we found in New York was electronics if you know what you are looking for and were to go for it.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

thats why im kind of pissed
thats why im kind of pissed off aswell aswell as the pathetic exchange rate, no transducers in stock. i may aswell have ordered it 6 weeks ago, would have been delivered, fitted and i could have been chasing that elusive deep drop prize. not saying i wont keep buying from the states... just surprised that when i can get an even exchange through paypal (losing a few cents) that the rate in seppo land is 8c less. easier to armchair shop than to visit the place.

For any boating or fishing gear the locals in the Big Apple
would buy it over the net as well if you get my drift. It is by far the most expesive place i have been in the states.Even Vegas was cheaper. That said Vegas has 60% vacancy in their housing and when i was there last they (the casinos) had profits down 20%ish on the same time the year before. They are hurting big time and are cutting the prices to the bone in some areas to keep stuff moving. The only down fall is that imports will hurt locals here and if they throw in the towel then we will have other issues again. Its just a thin line and the balance is the hard part.

Understood. but i rarely shop
Understood. but i rarely shop local as i have no license an its easier to armchair shop, plus its cheaper.
I'm hoping with the current exchange rates the "local" market will start to compete with o/s.
Anyways had my whinge, have to order a tranducer from somewhere is the bottom line...

Why not order and pay online
Why not order and pay online and just have your dad pick it up?

103/104 I think. Basically
103/104 I think. Basically the bank rate minus any fees.
I was stuck in Denver for a week so I did heaps of online shopping. Has lots of my diving gear sent straight to my hotel shipping was usually free and took two days to arrive.
We get ripped off seriously hard here. I Have been looking at upgrading cars and a BMW 335 cost 25k compared to 70k here second hand. Boats is another story and most already know the price differential with exception of the shipping cost.

I couldn't get over the fact
I couldn't get over the fact when I was in LA you could buy a spanking new Range Rover for less than a later model Discovery 3 here..... supply / demand

They have a far bigger population and that equals a far better buying power.

That and most their
That and most their Utes/4x4's have bigger engines instead of our poxy underpowered "fuel efficient' ones here. And i dont even mean their big F trucks, even their smaller one have bigger engines..........more towing power. Guess it helps having cheaper fuel there :(

When i went in may last year
We had to pay $2.50 more a gallon for fuel. The guys i spoke too with bigger rigs said there would be a civil war if they got charged that much.

I think the tax we pay on
I think the tax we pay on cars (particularly luxury car tax) has a lot more to do with the raping we get on high end cars over here.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I found everything was way
I found everything was way cheaper in October last yr when i spent 6 weeks there and the exchange rate was around 1.01. Even in the real touristy areas of times square, vegas etc it was still cheaper than here but if u went out of them it was a shitload cheaper again.

january
i was in fort collins in colorado in january for a month and i just went to wall mart and the price diff for rapala lures was extreme. 5 bucks over there 15-20 over here! no contest! going back within the month and the range in some of the sports stores makes you drop your jaw! some of the rods i saw and the prices were ridiculous! love to shop local and i do when i have to but if not sorry id rather pay the cheaper price and i do at least 5-7 trips a year to the US to c my little girl so it makes sense!

....not sure if you've got
....not sure if you've got your figures around the right way.....if you are complaining that your exchange rate is US$1 buying AU$0.92; then you are a hard person to please. That's the equivalent of AU$1 buying just over $1.087 US.... rate hasn't been that high for about 3 months ! and about 1.2% less than the highest rate in the last 20 years !!....
If AU$1 only bought US$0.92 I'd be a bit disappointed....

cheers for the correction.
1au doller buying 92cUS.
aswell as %8 tax in items purchased.
mind you this is just second hand knowledge being passed onto me.
anyway as stated before easier to shop online and fork out the shipping, even on larger items rather than buy in new york.
