Anglers blast Council on Busselton Jetty fishing ban

quote"
The Shire of Busselton has banned fishing off the last 150m of Busselton jetty, enraging local anglers who have waited 12 years to cast a line off the end of the 1.8km structure.
South West recreational fisherman Howard George said the council decision, made just days after the jetty was officially reopened on February 2, had banned a tradition enjoyed by generations of locals.
The end of the jetty has been off limits for the past 12 years following a 1999 fire that destroyed much of its last section. The structure has since been rebuilt at a cost of more than $27 million.
Mr George said anglers targeted pelagic fish such as blue fin tuna and tailor as they travelled past the end of the jetty and the ban would mean the chance of bagging a big fish would be lost to locals who did not own a boat......( more in article)"
I was really looking forward to one day fishing the end of the jetty for those tuna they got back in the 70's before the cyclone and fires took the end off.
Very sad to see that fishing concerns where not taken into account in a ruling that favours only divers and observers at the UWO. Being allowed to fish 50m west of the OWC would have been a great boon to the area and even paying a special admission to get beyond the OWC to fish would have been ok.

as far as im aware the end
as far as im aware the end was banned so that the dive operator in town here could make a bit more money ... funny how placing money in the right pockets seems to work in busselton... :(

Not entirely sure that's
Not entirely sure that's true? They will definitely be paying sone sort of license (whether specific to the jetty or not). When I rang them they said they can only dive two days a week (think there's 2 companies though). Wouldn't surprise me if the dive operators and observatory were the ones who got it no fishing (as opposed to people in the general community opposed to it)

Absolutly disgraceful
decision but not suprising to those of us that have dealings with the Shire of Busselton.
I'd say there's a fine Pezdog but good luck getting out there. High barb wirefences and security staff will be employed to keen us out.

Thanks Matt
Bit of a shame!
Lot of old timers will be shattered by this. Although my old man probably wouldn't wanna walk that far anymore he has always said the end is where the Bonito and larger Tailor are!!

Old fart read in
in the local paper or West Australina (he was reading both) that it seems also they the Busselton Council wants restaraunts down that end also, how true or factual it is I don't know. Bloody stupid bureaucrates again, bet there is a mate that wants to build a cafe or something like that, wouldn't put it past Busso Council.
Does the railway go right to the end? As I'd love to see the new jetty but can't walk that far due to dicky knees.

Jetty Access
Interesting situation - quite a few years ago when the jetty development was first mooted a meeting was held at the Churchill Park hall for all interested parties. Many of the rec anglers feared exactly what has transpired. One of the stipulations of the redevelopment was that no user group would be disadvantaged - LOL talk about "Four legs good two legs bad!" Animal Farm stuff if you've ever seen it. Its the usual situation that compromises are continually made until one user group is disadvantaged for the benefit of all others. The biggest issue is that Rec Anglers have NO peak body acting on their behalf over this issue - yep plenty of people have opinions but the effectively stand for nought against other well organised user groups such as the divers and money chasers - the whole thing has become a commercial venture which places REC Anglers collectively at the base of the jetty food chain.

We've got some real C#*k
We've got some real C#*k heads running this shire so nothing surprises me, they are all looking after their own interests. Just need to see the FIFO from Busso debate to see what the agenda is some are pushing.

Wait a while fellas!
There is another 90 meters to slap on the end, & it wouldnt surprise me if they will allow fishing there once complete, but not near the underwater observatory which is understandable.

I some how don't think so,
I some how don't think so, they already sniffing around for tenders / interest into shops etc for that area.
Hope I'm wrong and they give the anglers a casting platform off the very end where they can ballon out for game fish.
My bet it will be some swanky Fish&Chips shop and tacky stores selling "made in china" Australian flags, fridge magnets and sox. jocks & Tshirts

Sorry rainbow,
not sure you understand mate. The end is the end. Beyond the observatory is section 9 and 10. This being the end of the jetty. This is the area in question and fishing has been banned after the shire was critisised originally for announcing a ban on fishing. They then took public submissions, held another shire meeting and decided to uphold the original decision.
The ONLY reason they have done so is to line there pockets from $ erned by local dive operators, which is rediculous because they have actually removed 90% of the original pylons that held the old growth corals. Nothing to look at.
The local fishing community is up in arms over this but what can you do???
