Another day out in the Prowler - Jigs & Plastics
Took Chris (Chrisp) out for a quick sesh to explore some new ground.
Got belted early on with heavy rain & strong northerlies which made things uncomfortable - far out it was cold! Got beyond the first reef & decided to troll up against it heading in a southerly direction in hope the northerly would calm down - funnily, this gave me fond memories of fishing tanta's, though, did I mention it was freeeeezing.
Within minutes, Chris was hooked up. It made Chris work for a good 10 minutes, doing the tuna dance down deep below the boat. Had to motor 50 meters away from it to get him up. Chris' outfit copped good punishment. Fatty 1 was landed.
Northerly was still pumping, so motored back into the reef & flicked EGI jigs around. Scored a few. Yum.
Northerly died & we were still keen to head out rather quickly for that sesh. Made a point that the small SBT's liked skirts & the bigger than average liked larger deep diving lures. Proved the theory & landed a rat on a skirt & another fatty on a deep diver.
Made it to our desired location. First drop on plastics - rewarded with a beaut Harlequin & Baldy.
Continued to pepper the area with jigs & plastics & scored good Pinks, Harleys, BB's & more Pinks.
Released everything bar the Baldy & Harley. It's a good feeling releasing those old man snapper.
Good day out for a quick sesh. Just needed to be patient with the Northerly. Did a comfortable cruise home @ 23 knots. I've been really impressed with the economy of the rig.
Baldy burgers at home mmmm.

You seem to be knowing what ground to look for Daz, another great trip. I must seriously need to work on my plastic/jig technique or I'm fishing the wrong grounds. I spent a good 5hours again yesterday with jigs/plastic and got nothing but a cuttle. Welldone!

Need to look for likely ground.
I've spent 15 hours trying to locate ground. Look at charts & don't fish the obvious places.
There's plenty of ocean out there... you just need patience & dedicate time solely looking for ground.

I wonder if you just need bigger skirts for bigger tuna? I usually just use the small Richter Jr Tornado or Jellybabe, perhaps I should size up?

But running bigger offerings might be worth a shot.

The light gear will feature until we have had enough of getting smoked but just got to hope they are around when we hit the spot up.
Will make for some fun times if they do and the cameras will be onboard for all the fun and antics.

and stop complaining about the cold, you'll be soaking up the rays in Christmas Island before you know it. I've acclimatized to 35C temps lately and the weather lady just told me to expect a chilly 3C when I get home.

Soak up that warmth Tim! It's been bloody cold & it's only compounded when you're fishing from a CC (as you'd be fully aware of).
My hands wouldn't function, so god knows what I would have done if I had to re-tie a rig.

We were using 7 inch
We were using 7 inch plastics rigged on 1oz to 1.5oz jig heads.

I like doing my bit by returning what's not needed. More importantly, these old man snapper have done well to get to the size they are now & they should soldier on for years to come. They are old and beautiful fish & a fresh feed of baldy & harley is better.
