Esperance

Sun, 2020-01-05 17:36

I have a mate living in Esperance who knew the bloke involved, through one of his mates. I sent my mate a message to check that he was okay, thankfully he was, he sent me a little bit of info.

He said the deceased was a diver who regularly wore a shark shield. Not sure if he had it on today but more information to come I'm sure.

RIP.

Appreciate the info, it would be good if the authorities provided more info on the circumstances of shark attacks ie Shark Shields and other conditions for shark attack victims. It's sensitive for those close but for the rest of us who dive it's valuable. The lady who was attacked off Mindarie I would like to know the circumstances and if they were wearing shields or other preventative measures. Heard nothing.

yep, agree completely. very little lessons learnt come from these incidents (apart from 'oh what a suprise a shark in the ocean type comments from keyboard experts". By the time report and findings come out everyone seems to have lost interest. As a diver there are many questions i'd like to ask but will never be answered.

One case few years ago

Sun, 2020-01-05 19:34

Back of Coventry reef , guy doing deco great white barreling at him from below done 45 deg turn meters away from his legs. He had shark shield on. Worked in that case. Abalone diver years ago had 3 shields . On him and hooker line. Didn’t work unfortunately . I spoke to abalone diver who knew him. Where they on ? Does more than 1 shield in close area effect how they work? I personally don’t rely on them. I wear one, other on bottom of deco line . I had a mako come close one time . It seemed to get angry and got closer and closer and faster and it was twitching. But there naturally a mental shark. Tried it snapper fishing on a float out back of boat, turned first few bronze whalers after that they didn’t care they just got use to it and smashed pinks . Even if it turns one away and you get to see shark worth it . Anything that gives you a chance of not getting attacked worth a crack.

Came on here to see if a shield was worn myself. As a diver I wouldn't enter the water without one namely because as Johnny alluded to, even if it works once....it's worked.

A few of us have always wondered whether it would work if a White was barreling up from the depths to hit you at full tilt which at their top speed can be anywhere between 40 to 55Kph.

So many questions...

He closed eyes thought he was gone for sure . I don’t really want to be put in that position , be like a squid, except be brown. We all take risks in there domain blah blah blah. Waiting for it . You don’t expect to go in car and get killed, you don’t expect to go for bush walk and get struck by snake. Don’t expect to go to beach and get mauled by dog.( some do ). Very sad indeed .

utter bull dust. I know if I had a gun it would be on my boat each time and recenet events would ahve seen 3-4 less sharks!!!!

You maybe on land buddy. But in the ocean with no protection or any weapon of sorts you are far, very far from the apex anymore.

RIP to the lad and much condolences to the family from a fellow diver but anyone who loves the ocean and everything in it would NEVER agree to killing an individual shark or a cull of these unbelievably amazing animals.

We all know our risks....

From what I read he had literally just jumped in the water, maybe he hadn't turned the shield on at that time. I guess and inquiry will find that out when they hopefully find his body. Condolences to his friends and family.

RIP. over the break i watched a doco about sharks and deterrent methods done by UWA research team at various locations in WA. the shark shields seemed to work initially for first pass or so, but after a while the sharks seemed to get used to the pulse thus rendering them ineffective. they were gonig to trial varying the signal / current / frequency output or what not to see if that was more effective. they were also testing some  wetsuits out with mixed results.

Shark Shields

Mon, 2020-01-06 12:08

Was on the rescue boat recovering  the three bodies from the barge collission off Carnarvon years ago, the water police divers went in the water with shark shields knowing full well there was a very big tiger and two other large sharks circling the sunken boat .

The helicopter above had radioed that the sharks were trying to get into the cabin of the boat where the bodies were, once the divers entered the water no more sharks to be seen even after the end of one of the shark shieds was cut off by the rescue boats prop.

Not an experience I would like to go through again, pulling bodies of people you know out of the water some 30 hours after they went missing

Mon, 2020-01-06 21:04

To witness .would have been horrible. Last one I read he always had one on . Must admit I only wear mine when I go below 20 meters. Stupid thing is more chance in getting done in close to shore than outwide. We all get complacent at times , unfortunately it takes a tragic event to wake us up.

By the sounds of it the poor Esperance fella didnt even see it coming. He had only just entered the water.

Tragic event, just reading he and family do not support culling.

I also looked to see what Sharksmart has been showing. NO tagged whites on the south coast in past 7 days. Either they set up a tagging program to give people confidence or not claim it is some sort of mitigation.

Apparently he was swiming down the anchor chain to ensure anchor was set, missus watching from the water holding onto the boat as he was hit...

Sounds like she did her best to assist but to no avail obvioulsy...

I'm also hearing sheild was off...

So the poor guy had all his scuba gear on and just jumped in to check the anchor was holding. I can’t understand what would have provoked the shark into a feeding frenzy. Is it just that the shark noticed something large and moving in the water?

curious to know why you would use the term "provoked" ?

could it be that the shark was just doing what sharks and other predators do and seeking a prey to survive ?

This is an interesting read

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190808-why-do-sharks-attack-humans

But there is no real evidence that sharks are actively hunting humans, according to the scientists who study them

With appologies to family & friends

Mon, 2020-01-13 13:38

The way it reads to me is that the shark didn't just take a bite to see what this thing is in the water, the shark has actually eaten him which has only occurred in a very small number of cases.
just out of interest is it known if he was wearing a wet suit and if so what colour was the wet suit.

All the recent pics I have

Mon, 2020-01-13 14:37

All the recent pics I have seen of him he is wearing the standard black wetty. Not that I put much stock into what a shark attack victim wears as its well documented people have been attacked by whites wearing quite literally anything from speedos to boardies and a rashy to wetsuits of various colours and anything in between

Also not sure about the shark having “eaten him” there and then as you say as from what I read it appears to me at least that he was attacked or mauled in full view of his partner who it was said tried to distract or scare the white into stopping. The White probably attacked the fella before taking off with him hence why they only found parts of his suit, the tank and a fin but not him.

Similar to the fella at Port Kennedy and the older swimmer at Cott, the deckie up at the Abrohlos and others…
