Sea Lice
If it was sea lice you would find them crawling everywhere and holes where they have eaten their way in.
They can eat a 10kg+ fish overnight just leaving the skeleton and skin behind like a rattle in a handbag

grubs up!
I have seen it before at the now defunked mackeral islands in mainly golden trevally
we always called it worms , but its probally some type of nemotode or parasite,
our museum man can help out id say.
We sometimes cut it out if it was small and ate the rest, by your photos that looks
pretty well infested, shame it looks like a good feed.

I always remember the Trevs
I always remember the Trevs at the Mackies were just about all infested with worms. You'd usually find a ball of them in the gut and the flesh full of holes. I thinks this is a diffent kind of parasite.

Greyband parasite? which one?
Pity about that in a fish which takes a lot of effort to bring to the surface. Which one of the 4 greybands had this in them? Biggest or one of the smallest?

It just looks a bit messy
So do mushrooms. Batter it (out of sight, out of mind) and eat it. Might be some good protein in it. htfu![](http://fishwrecked.com/sites/all/libraries/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/wink_smile.gif)

Got a mate in Busso who's kids love eating Sambo and he had a pile of fillets chunks on a separate plate where he'd cut exactly the same looking shit out, saying it was worms and it's pretty common . (?)
Wouldn't have been feeding it to my kids, but hey - his boys scoffed the lot !

I could be wrong, but from what I know fish parasites are not transferable to humans. So if you eat it you wont get sick.
But I wouldn't wanne try!

Anisakid parasites
I have to admit to not knowing what these were, although I did guess at nemotodes. So, I sent off to colleagues and got this from Rob Adlard, a parasitologist at Queensland Museum. "This is a nice infection of larval anisakid nematode worms - encapulated by melanised host connective tissue (quite common in mature serranids)" So, the black strands are the reaction of flesh of the Grey-band (melanised host connective tissue) in response to the worms. You can read all about them here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anisakis

Great work Glenn
you help is very much welcome here.
Excuse my ignorance but does that basically render the fillet inedible to humans?

not sure
Matt, I'm probably equally ignorant about parasites...but from what I read on wikipedia, I think I would not eat it. My colleague said cooking and freezing should kill the parasites, but I've had ciguatera poisoning, so even though its a completely different thing, I tend to err on the side of caution now....

Had a call back from Fisheries Research
and they tend to agree with the nemotodes, and has been further sent to a parasitologist for further inspection

Can you describe how you felt when you had cigutera, how long did it last and what did you have to do to be rid of it?

ciguatera
Mate,
It was terrible! I was cruising around the Galapagos Islands and we caught a big Almaco Jack (Highfin Amberjack). The cook on board made up some fantastic ceviche (raw fish marinated in lime/lemon juice - South American speciality). The result after three dishes of the stuff was miserable. It started with high fever, nasty headache and nausea which lead onto the dreaded gut 'evacuation' from both ends. My whole body ached and I had no strength at all. I was in so much pain and felt so sick that I couldn't sleep. Perhaps the worst part was the skin sensitivity - anything touching me was painful, including clothes, bed sheets etc. related to that was that anything cold felt like it was burning hot. I was really crook for a few days (lucky I think, because I know someone else who was written off for a couple of months!), but the weakness lasted for weeks. I got a relapse a few weeks later (perhaps I ate some more contaminated fish???), which was probably worse than the first time. I had fever so bad, I could feel my muscles degrading - I thought I was going to die at one stage and was stuck on a 24 hr train ride in central Peru (I won't describe the condition of the toilet on the train...). It is the sickest I've ever been in my life - I ended up seeing a Peruvian doctor who didn't diagnose it (and why would he even think about it really - he lived in the mountains...). I only put it together when I got back home and researched the symptoms. There is nothing you can do - I just drank as much water as I could keep down until it passed enough to eat something and slowly get back to a normal diet. I definately don't want to cop it ever again, although I think I'm more susceptable to relapses now!

Common in Red Throats, Coral
Common in Red Throats, Coral Bay, Exxy.
I have eaten fillets before with it and had no problems but we normally cut it out if its not very much but looking at that fillet its all through it.
On the Red Throats you can sometimes tell by looking at the fish before it been filleted if it has worms bad. It gets faded patches on the skin.
Saw a show on tv about this bloke and his wife and kids sailing from England and they ate a fish with ciguatera and he described it exactly like you have Glen.
