Anybody see 60 minutes covering marine sanctuary's tonight?

To me it appeared usual media sensationalism was employed & the only person whom I thought actually provided a valid discussion was given a 10 second time slot. What took place next from a pro fishing perspective was rather embarrassing & quite clearly handpicked to tarnish our reputation.
We need to become more media savvy putting forward more articulate & measured spokespeople before we are crucified. Enough is enough!

I just caught then end of it.
I've just tried searching the net to check out the whole story but doesn't look like it's that easy to view again. Keen to see it if anyone finds it.

Only caught it by accident as I think that program anyway has had a remarkable decline from supposed reputable journalism (as good as it possibly can be for mainstream) to a glorified version of today tonight / current affairs sensationalist hack shite. If you catch it Oracle then be prepared to watch it with your head in your hands as I did.

What a joke
All of that coming from a former speedboating champ, and she laughs off people going bankrupt. If that sanctuary zone goes ahead from Albany to kalbarri there will be alot more than bankrupt.

Yeah I saw it. The story was
Yeah I saw it. The story was definitley presented one sided and they picked people who didn't do us too many favours. I guess at least it was brought into the spotlight, gotta find some postives. The best voice we have is at the voting boothes. At the moment the greens get the ears of the government, we can change that. There's enough of us around to sway the decision makers. We need to protect the environment and the fish stocks but total closures on a wide scale are not the answer.

Yes it was embarrassing
I'm sure she had all the best intentions but the non fishing fraternity would view fishos as a bunch of loonies after watching that. Whilst it is good that it got some air time it is unfortunate that Channel 9 choose to show an unbalanced report.

Disappointing
Disappointing to see that we were represented by a wailing banshee & on the other side you had a well informed calm Valerie Taylor putting her point across. Didn't look good at all. Obviously it was one sided & the banshee was picked for her inability to discuss anything in a reasonable decibel level!

Bunny I agree with your post
Bunny I agree with your post mate.
In regards to the fisho's perspective I would have hoped that someone in her group would have pulled her aside to point out that her behaviour was innapropriate & damaging to the cause. In hindsight I am sure the only words her husband mutters are "yes dear"

mmm where is our peak-body to send a right of reply to 60minutes?
I think they should be able to get an answer reply back at the 60minutes team, if not go to the other network and let them take ourside of the story....thats how it works in the media!

The piece compared us at
The piece compared us at length to Palau, saying how they had protected the whole of their waters, etc. Clearly misleading and deliberately so.
In fact, I understand Palau's marine park is a whale, mammal and shark sanctuary, and it is mainly commercial fishing closures. Rec fishing is still allowed.
A very poor effort by 60 Minutes, even leaving aside the fact that is was clearly edited to paint fishing in a poor light (screaming woman v softly spoken senior (herself a former spearo!), fishing footage being a wahoo being gaffed in the side and heaved aboard).

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

The PM over there must be on a good wicket, seeing that boat.
Wonder if he got that as a gift from conservation groups.
And definitely agree re: the wailing banshee doing more harm than good!

jeeze, after listening for 10
jeeze, after listening for 10 minutes to that rabid fat dugong on 60 minutes, I felt like making the whole of Australia a marine park.....where do they dedge these creatures up from. Unfortunately, there are a lot of redneck fisherman (and rotund loud mouthed fisherwomen it would seem....) who give us all a bad name. It is pretty clear from this site that most of us here want not just a sustainable fishery, but an improved marine ecosystem.
As much as it may go against some here, I do think we need more total ban areas but it has got to be carefully determined, and not just half the south west, which is clearly rediculous......I think commercial management is at least as important as recreational.

It showed palau locals
It showed palau locals unloading crates of fish and other guys preparing nets with pro boats in the background. Total no take zone? yeah right, the palau boys must go and rape and pillage other countries fishing areas, like what happens to us over here

Shark fishing ban only.
Had a look at some web sites on Palau, never read anywhere that there were total fishing bans. Looks like asian commercial fihermen go there and catch loads of sharks only to take the fins, and dump the rest, so they have imposed a ban on shark fishing. There maybe a "no fishing" zone around a couple of small islands for a few months of the year, but read nothing else.

What do they say about facts and a good story again???

Just watched the and i think
Just watched the and i think it actually shows passion as well as explaining why the passion on behalf of the fisherman.
I don't think its a very fair attitude from Nine and VT though. The biggest problems facing fishing is not the laws or the amount of fishing areas its IMHO poachers and people who fish outside the law. People who take there limit and them sum. These people need the book thrown at them. Not a pat on the wrist and forced to say sorry.
Secondly is illegal fisheries. This happens so much and is a major reason for large fisheries being over fished. Shark fishing would be fine if the illegal shark finners were stopped. Tuna would be alot better if not for illegal tuna fisheries. Patagonian tooth fish, hell even whaling these are all illegal fisheries that are so big we can plan around them and should be better prepared to stop them.
As for Palau well yes there area is a Protected area. But lets face it 20000 people what are they protecting there waters from Poachers once again. Palau is being poached like no other area in the world. Many conservationists are calling it the last frontier. Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd have been patrolling these waters on behalf of the Palau government for over ten years. They are 100% authorised to stop poachers under on behalf of the Palau government.
So if Valerie Taylor thinks they've got it so right maybe she should look a little deeper.
Just my opinion. Better to be heard load then not heard at all.
