awkward moment

Sandy was on her way home from our shop tonight and came to an intersection and there was a boat on its belly on the road. there was a number of people helping to get it back on the trailer.
a question for everyone, these people had removed the trailer from the car and were working on putting it back on. how would you go about it if it was you. i thought the best way would be to reverse the car slowly while someone was winching it up so it wouldnt drag on the road and cause more damage.
have seen it a few times and always wondered how it would be done

No worrys,,i guess if the winch broke that would make it impossible to winch it back on,,personally i would do what you suggested anyhow and reverse the trailer back,,

yeh , and make sure you have
yeh , and make sure you have tie downs at the arse end of the boat to stop any movement or roll , poor bastard. i also have a small chain linked to the boat where the winch is , so if the winch fails or the line snaps the small chain there to stop it goin anywhere.

I have helped a few people
I have helped a few people put their boat back on its trailer when I was on a Karratha run up the coast and taking the trailer off the car is the way to go, if you try to reverse and winch at the same time you run the risk of pushing the boat backwards and doing more damage.
In most cases the boats were incorrectly loaded with all the weight being down the back of the boat, a bit of speed and a decent hump in the road and the boat starts to steer the car. Its never nice to come around a bend to see a boat on the road and the tow vehicle on its roof full of injured people.

so true fishintruckie,
as you know old fart retired truckie and all our loading of the boat is up the front for the weight to go on the tow ball, he reckons when we go away I take half a ton of food hahahahahah and that also goes for loading your car trailer or caravan. Hate being behind a caravan/boat that is swaying in the breeze.

when we have gone away, we always load the boat with the weighty stuff over the axle. never had a prob with sway . but as you said , not good to see it happen but it still happens

if its a flat surface id
if its a flat surface id leave the car in neutral and let it rollback with the trailer .. with someone in the cab of course .. otherwise unhook the trailer but chain it with a length of anchor chain to the back of the car still so it cant roll once the boat is off the ground.

have you ever tried to winch
have you ever tried to winch a trailer while someone is reversing the car, not the safest thing to do.
I have put a boat back on we took the trailer off, it was difficuly but we managed.

Been there done that. Lost
Been there done that. Lost my 18ft surfrider at the lights in the pouring rain. Had about 15 blokes in a few seconds decend and we just lifted her onto the trailer - couldn't believe it! Mind you, she was just a shell at the time as she was getting a full refurb.

You will have to unhitch the
You will have to unhitch the trailer. As you winch it up the tongue will lift, it's more like winching the trailer back under the boat, then winching the boat back on the trailer. Can only be done with the lighter boats though.

tow up
we lost a boat of the trailer after a trip to steep point a long time back and to get the boat on the trailer we jack knifed the car and trailer back to the boat which allowed another car to reverse back to the winch post and connect a tow rope to the boat and pull the boat back up on the trailer as the original winch post had snapped off, then we tied the boat down to the trailer

Unhook
Have done a couple, not mine!, take the trailer off the towball but leave the chains attached. This lets the trailer rise up as the boat is winched back on. Again as other have said, have the car in neutral with someone steering as its winched on.
