Can't say I've ever caught any baldies south of Rotto either. All the ones we have caught have been from Ocean Reef and further north. Best is to look for flat coral ground, it is where we have got onto most of ours.
We found them on the flat coral yesterday in 40 m of water. The bottom on the sounder looked pretty average and there were only a few specs which looked like fish. If we missed either side of the coral there would be nothing. Get over the top of it and everytime it would be thumping big bites, seems they were very localised where we were fishing. Say further north is definately the place to fish if you want to get one.
will give two rocks a try soon then got a lot of spots marked up theire was given them by a guy who had been using them for may years. not sure what the ground is like but most seem to be on directional bank or deeper.
Couldn't find any tuna out there today. Trolled for near on two hours from the north of garden island to west end through bait schools and the occasional bird working. Very quiet on the pelagic activity for us, hardly any bottom fish either.
Heard that there were a few billfish raised yesterday by the boys out at the trench for the bluemarlin classic.
