Battery connection to radio

Hi guys, I have just put in a new 27mhz radio to my quintrex and have a few questions.  There was an am/fm radio already installed so I did some adjusting and cutting to flush mount the two-way alongside of this.  Now, there was power run to the old one through a connecter in the photo and being the same brand this, now works for the new one.

What I want to know is there a double adapter for this connection that I can add and power both radios rather than climbing under the dash and swapping the connection each time?  I've done the runaround and checked auto stores, Bunnings and BCF with no luck, they seem to think it is specialised as it is waterproof/water resistant.  I do have the cable to connect the new one to the battery but am a bit useless with electrics and thought that the double adapter way would be cheaper and easier than getting an auto or marine electrician to hook this up.

Thoughts/advice welcome.

Thanks

Just join the power supply

Before that connector, there will be a positive and negative wire, get some auto crimping wire connectors and just twitch and join both sets of wires that suppy both radios to the power supply.

Leave the stereo as it is on

Leave the stereo as it is on its own circuit. You want to put your 27meg on its on circuit aswell. The fuse/wiring protecting the existing circuit isn't rated for the extra electronic equipment, plus if you get a fault on one piece of equipment your going to lose both when the fuse blows. I would guess you would have some sort of switch panel with fuses /isolating switches which you would Ideally want to run your new equipment back to then you dont need to go back to the battery. PM if you want more info

Solder connections are best if possible.

I like to solder all my electrical connections where i can, as this gives a great connection because corrosion between crimped connectors can be a problem further down the track. Then again I love overkill. I agree that each electrical item should have its own power supply and fuse.

you could

you could easily parallel of the existing circuit but you will be putting extra load on the existing circuit best you run its own dedicated supply with its own fuse just a question why did you go 27mhz as against vhf

A few reasons I suppose to

A few reasons I suppose to go with 27mhz.  I'm not really experienced with the pros and cons of either but thought that I won't be going too far off shore, more people around using that type of radio and I'd read that you need some sort of qualification to leaglly use vhf.

Separate Power Supply

Mon, 2013-07-29 19:17

I would put in a separate power run for the 27 Meg as it is a piece of safety gear and you would not want to lose it because the AM/FM went on the blink. I have a VHF and I connected it directly to the 12 volt BUS instead of going through the switch panel. I thought as safety gear the minimum connections the better.

Just my two cents worth

Thanks guys, hopefully

Thanks guys, hopefully avoiding a fire on the boat.  Will take the advice and try to work out how to set up seperate power for both.  I might look at how the first radio has been set up, which I'm pretty sure has been done safely and correctly by the previous owner and try to copy that.  Both radios are the same brand and connection.  I'll see how it goes.
