Beach flicking help
Submitted by Tchampney on Thu, 2014-07-03 20:04
Hey all,
This afternoon I spent 3hrs flick my gold bomber15A, halco twisty 20g and 40g down at my local beach secret harbour for not one fish or a hit. Can anyone give me some handy advice to land one of this monster tailor? Despise the no fish it was a lovely afternoon for it!

I'm no tailor expert...
...but "lovely afternoons" at the beach normally aren't the best conditions for them...best to have at least a moderate onshore breeze and an incoming tide. They prefer a bit of chop.
As far as monsters go, better chance out on a boat, sitting on an offshore reef...that's where the local jumbos are most likely to be!

forget the lure
Tailor are there. average 47cm size and salmon at the moment
conditions mean nothing - calm or wind. its all
Gutter or hole, full or low tide coming to a peak, best on sunset.
try mullie on snelled 5 O's or hearing to avoid little bites
best to catch that little stuff on small hooks with squid then put on live.
seems to be doing the trick lately

You might have some better
You might have some better luck with Mullies, I have only ever caught about 5 or 6 on lures but countless amounts on bait
Good luck buddy hope you get some :)

There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

What speed is the retrieve
Tailor can be finicky little buggers, or go ballistic and inhale everything.
Always change your retrieve speed. If the dont go for a slow retrieve increase the speed. Keep varying this to see what they might be interested in.
Also with a slice let it drop to the bottom, then retrieve it in. That way the lure covers the water column.
With the Bomber a few sharp cranks to get it down, then retrieve.
Perseverence is the key, but as mentioned above, if you get bored use Mulies.

Allways been an on/off spot for me.
Sometimes they're just not biting. I was there for about 4 hours early yesterday morning fishing a reasonable gutter with the rising tide. Was using mulies and squid and got absolutely nothing. Mulies were staying on the hooks until they dissolved, no pickers nothing was touching them. Disappointing fishing but not a bad way to spend the day off.
