Best GPS to Buy
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sun, 2010-11-21 22:09
Was talking to a mate today and the discussion came up on which GPS to buy as his one is one of the very first ones to come out and has no chart
Hes looking for something with an around 6 inch screen
He has a Furuno sounder so how do they compare as well I have been involved with Navman but have seen some that leave CMAP for dead or detail

the hummingbird do a great
the hummingbird do a great gps , running a gold navionics card. i have the 917c split system but mainly ran it on the gps as i had a furuno 585. might be worth taking a look on the net to see what they have in way of gps only but go gold or platinum card for better detail

lowrance use navionics as
lowrance use navionics as well. i've had 2 and both have been excellent as chartplotters.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

another vote for lowrance
another vote for lowrance here, unless you can afford to go the laptop based stuff. I have the 8inch lowrance and it is great.

Garmin G2
Its a bit of a strange one..
Absolutely the best detail as it shows 2 meters contours and reveals a lot of detail that is not shown on maps that have 10 meter contours.
BUT and this is a big BUT...i only does is for maybe 50% of the map. By that I mean that features that are plainly shown on other maps are completely missing from the G2?????? Its like they only really detailed half the map and the rest is just straight depth lines where the others have huge changes in contour line of even big lumps.
They are also not accurrate. I have found it out by up to 500 meters on some indicated lumps but then the next nearest lump is spot on..
As with everything it can be a very usefull guide but the frustration with the errors make me use two different chartplotters. But when I zoom in with the garmin and it does show more detail there is one thing for sure....I catch fish from ground that the other chartplotters dont show..
