Black bream, lures and kids?

Recently I've taken my 8 and 11yo daughters fishing around the Swan River, targeting black bream around the Guildford area.

We've used bait (whole river prawns), but my 11yo saw a couple of really old lures in my tacklebox and asked to try those. I was worried she would find lure fishing frustrating and lose some enthusiasm so said "keep using bait".

She keeps asking after lure fishing and when we watch fishing TV she is always pointing out lure caught fish, so I'm going to grab a couple new lures to try.

Can anyone recommend some good lures for Bream, and some tips on how to teach a child (and me) to use them effectively? I've always just used baits, the lures I collected as part of "fishing packs" and never really got into them.

Thanks!

I would go to a tackle shop

I would go to a tackle shop that knows there Bream stuff, Bluewater Morley and complete Angler in Nedlands,ALLBOATS in Kingsley might be closest to you i don't know, SX40's,Halco 35's, and cheap Strike pro lures might be a good start, use 4 to 6lb braid like Crystal firelline with a rod lenght of flurocarbon leader.

You will need to find areas where there a bit of sand and not to much weed so you are not loseing your lures to snags etc,,sandy flats and so forth,,cast as far as you can out and slowly wind the line back in,very slowly just enough to make the lure wobble, put a few pauses in to as a bream might be following and soon as you pause it bang.

Don't strike at a bream when it hits like you would bait just wind the line and put your rod tip high and keep it high the whole time you fight it,,you don't pump and wind like you do with other fish,,

Always crush the trebles and have some long nose pliers to get the lure out of a flapping fish as bream fishers get trebles in themselves all the time,,

But the most important thing is find good locations,,your area you are now may or may not be suitable with snags and it adds up when you lose a few,,

Oh and check the lures youi have,,around 5 cm could work well,,Good luck i amsure she will find lure fishing 10 times more exciting than boring prawns, best time after 4pm often, dusk is prime time,,
