Boat Build - LAUNCH DAY - MORE PICS ADDED Mast, rigging and main sail now on

Massive boat build by my step father Ian - in the water at last - still plenty to do great to see it on the water.  Built all by himself - 22 years in the making - to say I'm proud would be an understatement

Wheelhouse and railing now brought down to be put in place, Starting to look better

Update - after several issues with transport down from Queensland the masts have now (finally) arrived and gone on (see last pic)

Transport from the yard where

Mon, 2013-06-10 11:34

Transport from the yard where it was built to the marina was an issue in itself.  took literally 6 months just to schedule this including one cancellation.  In the 4th pic down you can see a whole heap of pvc piping on the left of it.  Had to put 5 rows of piping from front to rear to prevent possiblity of power lines contacting the steel (so the power lines would just slide over the piping and not touch the steel)

They have a gantry at the Marina (can been seen on the left in the background of pic 6) which will pick it up off the trailer on slings and then lower it into the water. The he can see how it balances and add any further ballast where needed (kept some of the lead ballast out of the keel for this reason).

22 years was a bit over schedule - some of it due to health reasons some due to various difficulties along the way that had to be solved.  World trip was in his inital plans however will likely now be round oz and here n there.  And Chris plenty of room for rods but I have been wondering how long it will take to drop sails/pull up if I hook up on anything decent on the troll!!  Might have to harness myself onto the swim platform at the rear somehow!!

Cheers

Wed, 2013-06-12 12:46

Draft of 2.8 metres. Sitting good at this point, just a smidge lighter at the front if anything - the Dogbox (wheelhouse) to be put back on weights around a tonne and will add a bit more weight to the rear, mast is to go just forward of centre. Once everything is back on final ballast will be added to level it out as required.

Wouldn't attempt it myself - think it would be beyond most people to tackle something that big (particularly by themselves).  He is a very persistant and patient type as well as having the engineering skills

That shape looks very familiar, but when I last think I saw it it was a rusty red. Was this build at the Marina boat building area in Maylands??

We were building a Farr 9.2 Yacht there some time ago and someone had a hull there that had that same shape. I almost feel sorry for him if it took 22yrs. What a project. The Farr from glass up only took 18months.

was only supposed to take around 10-12 years but had some health setbacks. Still less delays than our governments have and their projects....

It's a huge project, can understand the 22 years just slipping by.  Where did Ian work on it for all that time...a very big backyard?

Was built in a sandblasting

Thu, 2013-06-13 08:20

Was built in a sandblasting yard in southern Adelaide. In the pic where its being christened the previous owner of the yard Mick is standing alongside my sister at the bow. He allowed Ian to build it there basically for no charge. They had plenty of spare land at the yard. Also they had a few issues with thefts over the years and I think they were happy to have someone staying overnight (in an old caravan) when he was down there working on it.

Short answer - once the sails are ready and on.......

can't get any more specific as their have been that many delays with various things with the masts - mainly transport wise - at least the sails are being done locally (they have measured it up three times and are now doing final measurements now the masts are up (guess you don't want to cut them the wrong length as that would be expensive)

Took her out for a bit of a motor around 2 months ago to calibrate the compass - here's the link

Cheers

PS before anyone asks the taller mast is 69 feet

Only have a couple of ones taken a lot earlier when work was being done, so mind the mess - (still messy as work still being done but getting better)
