Boat condition report/ valuation

Hi Guys,

As the heading suggests i am looking to get a condition report and valuation for my recently purchased (2nd hand) Westerberg. As the hull is over 20 years old I need to get these in order to get the thing insured. I have just been quoted over $400 to get this done, which i find a little steep. Is this a fair price?

Any recommendations that can do this for cheaper?

I'm located in the fremantle area, so ideally I do not want to travel too far with an uninsured boat, or better yet they come to me.

Cheers for any info

 SGIO don’t require condition

Thu, 2016-07-07 19:21

SGIO don’t require condition report for older hulls 28 day cooling off period as well over the phone ..better off putting the 400 smackas towards a service and if need be get the bloke to write up a condition report at that point imo . I’ve always just told the insurer how much I want the 3 components insured for .

I considered this also but

I considered this also but they won't let you insure just the whole boat, trailer and hull at an agreed price and you have to break down each component and put a value on them to make it equal your replacement cost and that's all they'll pay out whereas Club Marine have informed that if I have a catastrophic motor event on the water then they will replace it with a new motor.

Maybe you've looked into it a little more and can offer some advice on the best way to go as RAC is massively cheaper or am I overthinking it and just need to insure the value of the boat at the replacement cost of the hull, motor and trailer rather than the market value?

I am with RAC for my dinghy because I've bought everything new.

RAC

Fri, 2016-07-08 23:14

Yeah Im with RAC also now on everything except the house as they dont cover tsunami/storm surge.
Cars and boat.

Cars even cover "filling with incorrect fuel"

Interesting looking thru the Club Marine PDS, it says the motor cover is as you say but only up to 5 years.
I was with Nautilas, who were fantastic right up until they changed Underwriters last year and I crossed paths with a dragon from Melbourne.
She told me they had "reinterpreted the PDS" regarding Layup months, but there was no change in the PDS.
A quote from RAC was cheaper, without having layup months at all.

The RAC one does require breaking down into individual parts, but with agreed value the worst scenario is maybe the boat sinks and they dont pay out the trailer.

Hey Rob H, I know this is off

Sat, 2016-07-09 09:25

Hey Rob H, I know this is off topic but you mentioned tsunami/storm surge cover for your house insurance - have you found house insurance that does cover that?

One thing everyone should make themselves crystal clear on with any boat insurance policy is the security requirements when storing your boat - it varies quite considerably and if your not up to speed with your individual insurers requirements you may not be covered in the event of theft.

Yes there are about 5 or so

Sat, 2016-07-09 10:48

Yes there are about 5 or so that do but Wesfarmers and RAC arent among them
CGU do, Westpac do, and several others who elude me just now.

Every few years I check the cost of house cover and go thru them

 If you have an engine

Fri, 2016-07-08 08:17

If you have an engine failure and you can prove an event that matches they contract conditions caused this they may then offer you a settlement. But remember that it will be depreciated with age. A 20 year old motor with get you next to nothing in the settlement.

They event depreciate items such as batteries as the have a short life span.

I paid $150 to get one done by Combined Marine in Joondalup a couple of years ago.

$400 seems a bit rich.

rac boat insurance,great service imo

Sat, 2016-07-09 08:29

just did a rac boat insurance claim, only had to get 2 quotes to fix my boat sprit, plus they paid out what i needed,i was with club marineand because i missed my monthly premium ,due to not having the money to pay because of my pay hitting my bank account, the person in charge wanted the money up front for the rest of the premium before they reinstated my insurance,so i switched to rac like my cars ,house etc, plus if this same scenario happens, they are a lot easier to deal with than club marine,im happy with rac service because the look after its customers

 no excess-you sure about

Sat, 2016-07-09 10:47

 no excess-you sure about that?
Didnt see that option, but to me its really a no brainer-make a claim for $100 then for the next 5 yrs you have to note it on any insurance you take out and get penalised for.

 Have made a claim through

Sat, 2016-07-09 13:41

Have made a claim through club Marine before and it was an easy process.  I went direct through a platinum club marine dealer ie chivers marine. No dealing with accessors, They handled the whole process. Didnt affect my ncb as l had bonus points from claim free years.
