Boat Insurance....

Wondering how many on here have an old / cheap fiberglass - Ali boat and don't insure it ?

I've let mine laps but am considering changing company's and getting a condition report completed by a shipwright just for piece of mind.

The boat itself has all the safety gear, nav lights work etc, trailer recently recondition
and licensed. Its still solid and I see no issues with it or my skippering capability.

Purchase price was only 6k..

The only thing I think of is if its in a road accident or something did happen on the water....and a mate was injured etc.

Thoughts ??

Insurance also covers loss

Thu, 2020-01-30 13:11

Insurance also covers loss and damage and two years ago I had an incident with 2x combos worth $900 and $600 and a GoPro overboard, a torn brand new bimini and broken rocket launcher and Clubmarine paid out everything except the braid on the reels which I still find very strange.

 Were your rod and reels

Thu, 2020-01-30 13:59

Were your rod and reels locked away on your boat? I was reading the club marine PDS the other day and noticed they only cover theft of fishing equipment if they were in a lockable compartment on the boat and there is evidence of forceable or violent entry.

Theft

Thu, 2020-01-30 20:44

Thats true for theft.

I have had a similar experience with a broken rocket launcher and they covered the lost gear as well - except the braid

There is a seperate clause for equipment that covers it seperate to the theft clause

Nah, I had one of those

Nah, I had one of those Oceansouth rocket launchers that came with the boat, was heading out in a strong easterly and landed heavily over the back of a swell and it broke apart sending two rods and my GoPro to a watery grave and tearing my bimini. Club Marine initially didn't cover the GoPro but initially told me on the phone they would and made me run around a get quotes and send proof of ownership in the form of previous videos and I used a clause in their PDS to succesfully argue that they had 'agreed' to cover it although this took me requesting the audio of the claim call to take to the Ombudman after they dug their heels in.

You don't have to worry about third party liability on the road

Thu, 2020-01-30 14:26

Your car insurance provides that coverage as the liability attaches to the driver of the towing vehicle.  BUT  it doesn't provide cover on the boat itself.  The P & I coverage which is the marine equivalent of third party bodily injury and damage is covered by your boat insurance and, as Andy said in this day and age it is really essential.

As for Club paying for the reels and not the braid......in a word BULLSHIT, yet another try on !

They don't cover tackle, I guess they consider fishing line as tackle.

Cheers...As much as I consider the likely hood remote I'm not immune so will continue with the survey.

I would need to read my old policy...wondering if the boat insurance covers the boat in the case of a road accident ?.

Club define fishing gear as rods and reels

Thu, 2020-01-30 19:09

So tackle boxes and all that clearly excluded however a reel simply isn't a reel without line ....it is an integral part as you can't use it as a reel without line .   They are on very weak grounds trying to argue anything else.

Insure.

Thu, 2020-01-30 20:41

I had let my insurance lapse on my 18 ft 6 half cabin for over a year.   As we planned a trip down  south  I though I better nenew the insurance.   10 days later heard locked up brakes out side my house. 2 crackheads lost control, smashed the front of my boat in and came to sudden stop due to the large tree out front.   Any way I got what I paid for it 18 years ago.  Thank God for insurance.
