Mustang 2000 tournament objections and recommendations
Hey Guys!
I have talked the Mrs into an upgrade, and shr really likes the look of a mustang 2000 tournament we have found. I'm taking here tomorrow to have a look in the flesh and get a feel for it.
I have done a search on here and there are a few posts going back several years, but I thought Id ask if anyone has some feedback on the hull, good/bad is welcome.
This is a late 90's hull which needs quite the tidy up (polish, carpet, upholstery, bench seat replacement, new electronics, probably full rewire) , but is clean and appears solid at first inspection. It appears slightly underpowered with a 2st merc 135v6. (which will be replaced in due course).
Sitting on an almost new trailer (original trailer was nicked a couple years back)
What are your thoughts on these boats?

How much ?
If you're going down the repowering road maybe wait a little longer , save some more loot and get something that ticks all the boxes in one hit ? .
My wife understands why I clean my rods n reels in the shower....

Hi Silver fox,
thanks for your thoughts, definatley need to take that into consideration when discusing price, and leave room for the re-power. The good thing with non-urgent re-powering is time to wait for the right engine to pop up.

I’m fairly sure these came out with factory pods and if yours has one ensure trim tabs are fitted and functional as they will be required on this hull. My mate had one almost identical about 5 years ago. The 135 is enough power as the hull is relatively light getting approx 40 knots at WOT

Thanks for the advice, no tabs fitted to this one.
Definitely the one with the factory built po
Sounds like tabs will have to go on the shopping list if we wind up getting it.

Took it for a test run this arvo, in less than ideal conditions.
Really leaned into the wind, and seemed very sensitive to weight distribution.
The old engine started second shot in a huge plume of white smoke.
Very noisy and smelly, no super surprise there.
Steering was stiff, and cable, so that would need to go hydraulic,
None of the electrics worked lights etc... Bilge pump was a trickle
Then at the ramp I noticed a bit of water coming in, the Bilge was not able to keep up, and it started getting a bit alarming.
Turns out there was an old deck wash, installed through the hull above the bung, and it was not sealed. Literally a 25mm hole letting water straight in.
The transom where the bung was, under the pod, was only about 8-10mm thick max. But it seemed fairly sound, and the tap test didn't show any dull thuds anywhere.
In the car the Mrs said to me that she was white knuckle scared in the arvo slop.
So,some big thoughts to consider

Sounds like it might be more
Sounds like it might be more trouble then it's worth, and the missus not being comfortable in it would be a deal breaker for me.
By the time you resolve those issues you would of been better putting that money into a better boat to begin with IMO.

My thoughts exactly Paul,
My thoughts exactly Paul, you have to wonder what other nasty secrets this boat has because it sounds like it hasn't been loved for a while.

For sure, looks like it's
For sure, looks like it's been for sale for a long time too (36 weeks on gumtree I think)
One boat that did catch my eye recently on gumtree was this one.

Yes the lean is typical of a podded hull without trim tabs. I would definitely be thinking more trouble ($) than what it’s worth. Sounds like you need to add full rewire and hydraulic steering to the list not cheap when you also have to add trim tabs and a new engine
