Boat Polishing
Submitted by bsir on Wed, 2015-01-21 13:00
I've recently purchased a new (second hand) fibreglass boat and am selling an aluminium boat (670 Coraline walkaround if anyone is interested).
Both could do with a bit of a polish.
Whats the best way of doing polishing them?
What polish to use?
I don't want to do it by hand as this would take too long to do 2 boats, so what sort of polishing tools to use?
Thanks

There are loads of youtube
There are loads of youtube vids for polishing fibreglass. Is the fibreglass oxidised or does it just need some shine?
If oxidised use 3m fibreglass restorer and wax, then polish and then wax with a quality carnuba wax.
If not oxidised, use meguiars 1 step compound then polish and wax.
A rotary polisher (like an angle grinder but slower) is going to be your friend. These are inexpensive but make sure you buy one with a variable speed control. Be sure to wash the surface between the steps to ensure none of the previous product is left before applying the next. You don't want to add swirls when you are trying to polish.
Once done you can use the wax twice a year to keep the shine going and repeat the whole process every 2 years.
Remember, gel coat is a paint and can be damaged if done incorrectly.

I bought and used this stuff after reading about it on here a couple of years ago. Great stuff I reckon. It is a bit of work but the results are worth it. I emailed the guy and he is really very helpful. Link below.
