boating busso

Hi Everyone,

I have had a post running recently about getting a new boat. I had some great advice.

Just wondering though, for around the Busselton area what size boat would you think is best. I already have a little 4.20m Dory which does the job, but after something a little bigger.

Is a 4.75 adequate or do people think go for 5.00 - 5.50m

4.75

I suppose it depends on the build, I have a quintrex bayhunter that is 4.75 40hp and I regularly head out 20nm from perth in good weather.  Geograph bay will generally be calmer than where I go.  I suppose it comes down to what you want to do with it smaller boats are easier to tow and beach launch

The 4.75 seems to be a very popular size. Wether that is a price point as there is a big jump to a 5.00m.

I just want something a little more comfortable to use in deeper water around busso or when i head up north to Coral Bay.

When i had my 4.1m tinnie i

When i had my 4.1m tinnie i would maninly hang in the bay out to the 4-mile or even 10-mile in real calm weather. You will find geographe bay doesnt really get affected by swell until you get out about 8 mile, or if its really massive swell around the cape or from the north.

I would also sneak out off the cape within a couple of km's when weather was nice even launching at Canal Rcoks with it a couple of times.

But now use 5.5m plate Ally that i take out wide off the Cape to the north and South regulary. I very much like having a big windscreen for when the weather turns bad and your bow wave crash over your bow and up the windscreen, plus a self draining deck(wet deck) so any water that comes in goes straight back out.

Buz, I would luv a 5.5m, but to find one with low hours is out of my budget. 1 powerball.

might have 20k if the missus lets me. looked at a couple nice 4.75 / 4.85 with low hrs ( up to 150 ). the 5m boats all seem to have 400hrs or so.

Keep looking mate, big thing

Keep looking mate, big thing with buying any vehicle is dont rush in to buy something because you think 'there wont be another one as good' deal.

Just for your knowledge, my boat is a 1995 with a 2003 115HP Merc 4 stroke and it had only done 186 hours(dont get out as much as i would like).

So they are out there. Picked a bad time to be looking for boats though as you'll find that you can often get boats for a cheaper price in Winter or bargain them down lower as its a quiet time of year for boating.

Good luck anyway mate, but for 20K i would think that you should be able to get something quite decent second hand around 5m. All that you need is patience and dilligence :-)

I got my boat for 8k (under half ur budget)  I have spent about 3k on an new bimini and new electronics over 3 years.  I will probably need 10k spent on a new motor within the next 5 years (97 jono I have no idea how many hours).  Maybe get a tub that suits and budget a new donk a few years down the track to ease the pain

 Size isn't everything.

Size isn't everything. suitable weight, freeboard, hull shape etc is equally important. Personally i'd not get a 4.75m ali because i'd end up just upgrading as its too much of a compromise in too many areas offshore. Inshore sure it would be fine.
