Submitted by John_M on Sun, 2010-12-26 14:35
Looking for a new set up I can use for bottom bashing back of Rotto etc (so something with balls, but not too big..ie tiagra 80w size aha). Prefer overhead set up. Been looking at some accurates and van staal rods. Any help would be appreciated

go local mate. all these post xmas sales will be on , so you should be able to get a good deal. drop into one of the site sponsors, they wont steer you wrong and possibly save you the headaches if something goes wrong with the gear. if you buy from the u s any waranty work needed doing it has to go back there

bottom bashing gear?!?!
maybe some ass-less chaps, paired with a fluro fish net singlet? perhaps you can borrow something from hoookts closet if you need gear to bash bottoms!!
haha, nah get a torsa mate. they are a fuggin good overhead, and should come in a bit over half your budget price. sturdy, good line capacity, and good retrieve rate. there are fark loads of good rods atm. best thing to do is go somewhere like campbells and see for yourself.

Plenty to choose from within
Plenty to choose from within that budget. The reel is probably more important than the rod.
I'd recommend the Jigging Master Powerspell PE 6 reel, powerful low gear ratio reel with the drag capacity and the winching power.
Another good value reel to check out are the Avet, particularly the JX. Narrow reel built tough and simply.

As an ex-avet owner, they're ok for bottom bouncers, but they're very ordinary jiggers. There is too much slop in the antireverse.

second the torsa
a great reel. pretty easy to use. Hold plenty of line and can use to jig too.

To answer your question, you
To answer your question, you have to ask your yourself how often are you going to use it? why spend so much for something you will only use it under 10 times a year.

Personally i wouldn't touch
Personally i wouldn't touch an Avet, seen too many bearing issue's in them.
Just look at a Torsa 16 or Talica 12 which would both fit the bill, then leave enough to look at rods like DemonBloods, Monster Mesh Max, Tcurves, Samaki etc as a "value for money" rod option.
Cheers,

The Avet's a few years ago
The Avet's a few years ago had average bearings but the newer ones are far better and smoother. We're restocking them for that reason and good feedback from customers, the new 10yr warranty is good also.

can be picked up comparatively cheap too.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Torsa here as well. I have a Torsa 20 and think it's a little overgunned for the metro area. If I had my time again I would buy the 16 or even the 16N.

I use my JigForce/Talica
I use my JigForce/Talica 8/30lb setup for all bottom fishing, unless the drift is too much for a #5 bean sinker.
