Braid for the beach
Submitted by rails8291 on Thu, 2012-08-09 12:50
Hey fellas.
Looking at putting braid on my surf gear, looking for brands of braid that others use off the beach and don't have problems with. I have heard that using braid in the surf you get alot of knots caused by the surf or wind knots, I have never used braid from a beach before so a good braid and poundage and any tips from fellow members that use braid in the surf would be much appreciated,
Cheers in advance for your help

fins
I have been using fins a few years now because its cheap if you know where to look and it works. I buy bulk spools so I use it for all my boat work also
alot of my reels I have two spools for as if its pretty weedy conditions braid is a nightmare so I will switch back to mono

30
but depends how heavy you want to fish. For 30lb I am usually lobbing a sinker from 3-7oz plus a bait on 13ft rods.
for my little bait catching rod I think I run anywhere from 6-12lb

I use Sufix Matrix Pro(older
I use Sufix Matrix Pro(older stuff) for my Surf Casting braid. Have 50lb on my Emblem 5500 and 30lb on my Emcast 4500. I have never had a drama with it. Everynow and then i have gone skimp and put shit swivels on, which usually has resulted in wind knots.
Though i find if i use ball bearing swivels i very rarely get them. Maybe 1 wind knot every 100 or so casts.
One of my mates put some 30lb Sufix 832 on(the stuff with Gore in it for abrasion resistance) and it was horrendous for windknots. Nearly one every 5 casts. And this was on his Emcast 4500 with all the same terminal tackle as i was using on my Emcast. He gave up after day two and put his spare mono spool on.
But agree with Rig about the beauty of having two spools and having mono on the other. I mainly use mono when soaking baits in reefy areas, just so if i snag up or hook a dirty big ray i can easily bust it off without losing expensive braid.
For my little Bream reel that i also use for Tailor Popping i run 6lb Finns.

I mainly beach fish and used
I mainly beach fish and used to use braid a fair bit...but like Rig said, when theres weed around forget it. Also if you are fishing more than one rod or with other people in decent swells or currents in gutters...tangles are a nightmare! gets too expensive, too time consuming...I just use 20-30lb mono now..and leave my braid outfits for lure casting and boat fishing.

As mentioned using mono
As mentioned using mono around Reefier/Rougher beaches and rock groins will help with dealing with seaweed and abrasion in harsh areas. Though if you want to use braid than anything from 20-40lb will do nicely. 20lb to suit Tailor and possibly Mulloway. Than 30-40lb if predominatley chasing Mulloway/Sharks/Rays. Tufline and Fins have done well in the past along the surf.
