I've broken a few.

Putting up the tail gate of the ute and snapping tips off.

Climbing over rocks and falling, snapping tips and guides off.

Mostly just careless stuff that could have been avoided.

I have only broken one

Tue, 2009-11-24 10:15

I have only broken one rod.  Took it out of the upright rod holder (to avoid breaking it of course) and put it with the reel at the back of the boat and tip facing up towards the seats.  After retreiving the boat I climbed up to adjust the motor trim and lent on the swivel seat and turned it slightly.  After hearing the snap I realised the tip of the road had gotton in between the seatpole and locking nut of the seat and when the seat turned SNAP.  Have now replaced it.  Still have the bits, - have thought of putting a tip (Broke approx 8-9 inches off) on the end of the break and using it as a stiff squid rod.

Generally I'm pretty careful with my rods hence only breaking one.

Cheers

Paul

Went down south a few years

Tue, 2009-11-24 12:23

Went down south a few years ago with a mate to get into some salmon and get him into fishing as he had only done a bit. so off we go with a rod each and a back pack full of lures and poppers. Mistake number 1 only taking 1 rod with me but we did have a big walk ahead and it was my favorite old 10 foot casting rod first decent fishing rod i had ever bought so sentimental. We had a few casts along the beach sight casting at the schools as we walked to the rocks My spot, good practice for my mate Rick that had never casted a lure or popper before. Finally got to the rocks and set up Mistake number 2 fishing next to a novice with a cheap Kmart combo i would rather call  a broomstick. We see a school of salmon so casting away i was on straight away nice 6kg salmon but before i fould out for sure it was a 6kg salmon Rick in his excitement as i was winding on the up stroke cast straihght into my rod smashing it breaking the top 2 eyes off making my rod about a foot shorted snapped it clean with his Kmart  broom stick , Rick missed out with this school. this went on for a couple of hours we were both getting plenty of salmon on various lures and poppers so apart from the snapped rod it was a great afternoon fishing and i have fished with Rick on many more occasions without and more incodents.

High sticked a sambo on the

Tue, 2009-11-24 12:29

High sticked a sambo on the first drop on my new rod.  A 2 piece turned into a 4 piece.

The rod made a loud bang.

It was a Kamikaze jig pro.  I heard a few of those snapped under pressure.

Kaysey actually hand lined the sambo in, while I reeled in the line.

Was a decent sambo over 30kg.

I own 3 Nitro rods now.

They come with a lifetime insurance of replacing broken rod sections no questions asked for $60.

That's a good thing to have when spending $300+ on a rod.

Wed, 2009-11-25 07:27

Hahaha the memories.

My head was mesed up that day on the Kwells.  I had really bad dry horrors, and I was confused.  Couldn't understand what the deckie was saying to me at one stage.  Never touching Kwells again.

I also spent 4hrs spewing my ring up.

Worst jigging day everrrrrr!

A sage fly rod

Tue, 2009-11-24 13:51

Is the only rod I have snapped - still not sure what caused it? One false cast and the tip went pop - 2 piece rod now a 3 piece!!

Lifetime warranty, so $50 (I think) and a week later I had a new tip section.

Me and Graphite ???

Tue, 2009-11-24 17:27

Unfortunately me and graphite rods dont seem to get along !!! Ive broken 3 in the last year and a half, all different brands and styles ...

And yes after the first I was extra cautious about rod angles/ highsticking ....

The first was a King Mac overhead which I'll sort of own up too,I may have taken a small step back to steady myself {was a rough day} which may have been enough to put the rod over the edge ....

The second was a Braid concept spin and I have no idea why ????

And third was a Monster Mesh overhead jig which lasted 2min, caught a small bronzie which decided to take another lunge at the boat while trying to cut the hook and crack  ...  SO  MMMMMMMMMMMMM   ????

Its a shame too because I loved the feel of graphite rods {even though they wern't top of the line} so different to traditional rods and to make matters worst I'm in the market for another rod but am a little hesitant about getting another...

Cheers fishfish...

Broken two Live Fibre barra

Tue, 2009-11-24 17:28

Broken two Live Fibre barra rods, both with fish on the end, not sure what caused the break.

Broken a Smith Komodo Dragon on a GT at Bugatti reef, due to the the ferrule coming apart over the course of half a days fishing.

snapped a 4/6 kilo strudwick sic stick after i landed a 6+kilo salmon off the rocks at point peron and was climbing back up out off the water back on to the rocks and the fish sliped out of my hands and back into the water with the lure still in its mouth and bag went the top 8 inchs off the rod

snapped my brothers 10ft custom built 8wrap land based game rod . had it on the roof rack off the troopy along with my 14ft 1 piece oz fex graphite rod , heading out to flat rocks when the bracket holding the rod tubes came off the bull bar and stuck in the ground with  the tops of the rods still tyed to the roof rack the rods bent past the drivers door before i could stop   when i got them un tied and un wraped my bros custom 1 piece was now a 2 piece but the 14 ft ozflex was still allright

Ugly stick

Tue, 2009-11-24 17:41

Mangled the top section of an ugly stick boat rod when a big trevally took a quick turn under the boat.Had it in a gimbal rod bucket and the rod didn't like a twist being put in to it and splintered itself over a 6 inch section about a foot down from the tip.

Penn power stick

Tue, 2009-11-24 17:51

Fought something for an hour at the cockburn grain loader. Three of us took turns until i got violent and locked the drag. The beast from the deep won and the rod snapped. Never saw it but it was a big ray for sure

Bust an oversize 10lb baitcaster on Alfred's boat. Big bull dolly rushed under the boat and there was just no where to go.

Silstar Power Tip

Tue, 2009-11-24 19:03

Was fishing up at Denham with a month or two old silstar power tip (real light one for bream) and managed to snap it on what i think was blackspot tusk fish.

Turns out when they say the warranty is void if broken when fishing for anything other than whiting flathead or bream they were being serious. At least it was only $85, i woulda been spewing if it was a bit more expensive

Wed, 2009-11-25 06:13

One I got a warranty replacement, the other I took the guides of and put in the draw. Its not really worth the time and money to rebuild them.

Lent a 6ft 1 peice graphite barra stik to a mate

Tue, 2009-11-24 22:44

and it came back in 5 peices. Didnt ask what happened. He might have tried to spear them with it. Had a folded up bimini crash through a fave 15kg spin rod and snap it at the front grip. I build a few sticks so the components are kept for whatever in the future. I made a choice tag applicator out of the section of a busted rod. Heard of blokes making gaff handles out of some bigger diameter sections

Broke 3 Megabass Kirisame's

Wed, 2009-11-25 06:32

Broke 3 Megabass Kirisame's and a Nories Road Runner when my sister went to get my stuff out of the rod locker, because she knows it's expensive she only takes one rod at a time, anyway. she went to the rod locker got out one rod and went to put it  away but she had  picked them all up and sat them with the tips just outside the locker so i saw it ran to hold the locker open tripped and slammed the rod locker lid down on them.
