I just recently got a Nikon
I just recently got a Nikon D3100 as thats what a couple of my mates have and I picked one up with twin lens kit for just under $900 Locally. Really impressed with it and it takes some quality shots, I mean I'm not the best photographer yet but I'm getting some great shots already. I got the one my mates have so we can do some lens swaps instead of all three of us buying the same lens each..

I agree with you mate
We bought the D3100 with dual lens and it's a great camera. My wife is taking some classes at the moment so she can get on top of it all. I have played with it a fair bit and have had some good results. We have a tri-pod and that really makes a difference. Nikon or Canon, you can't really go wrong.

What do you want to use it
What do you want to use it for? What are your reasons for wanting a dslr? Always better to get the right camera rather than the "best" one that doesn't suit your needs.

Fair Point
I have a Finepix 5800 point and shoot with a 10X zoom that I keep in the car and use for all sorts of things like work pics and fish pics. It does a great job. The DLSR comes into its own when doing photographic sessions and for those special moments. I must admit also that it feels good to own a good quality DSLR. It gives me an expensive toy to play with LOL.

Canon vs Nikon
Canon vs Nikon is exactly like Holden vs Ford. Couldnt have said it better myself.
My advice would be to find out what brand your friends have (if any have DSLR's) and get the same so that you guys can swap and interchange lenses easy.
All the guys I go with use a Canon and so I brought a canon and we all interchange lenses as we need to.
I am sure there are pro's and cons for each brand but honestly we are not professionals so go with your gut.
I have the predecessor to the 600d and I love it. perfect size, awesome pictures and easy to use. Not an amatuer camera but not a pro camera either.
In saying that though the camera that gets the most use is my girlfriends Canon G12 as it takes just as good pics, is a bit smaller and we have a waterproof housing for it.

it does not matter which body
it does not matter which body you buy as long as you have good glass you will get good pictures, if i was in your situation i would think about if i would be using the camera lots and if you wanted to go into photography, if not go the 600d if yes go 60d. you dont want to be upgrading a body 6 months down the track.
but like i said i would rather get good lenes then a really good body
hope this helps
Have a look at my site i use a cannon 50D

Pay the money for a decent
Pay the money for a decent lens for any model camera and you're laughing. Just google 600D photo gallery and gave a look at the quality of pictures.
I'll try find something for you..
