Candi Dasa

I'm off to Candi Dasa in Oct - wondering if a travel rod should find its way into the suitcase and what line class it should be?

I'm guessing I could get a ride out in an out rigger to a reef, so perhaps some trolling and popping gear?

Anyone know the go for east bali?

Cheers

Matt

Ps wonder if you can hire kayaks there?

I do, but only from a scuba

I do, but only from a scuba diving sense sense....

Seriously, if you do dive (or want to - they can sort you out anyhow), hit one of the guys up at Tulumben and dive on the American cargo ship USS Liberty sunk by japs in ww2, it's not that far if your in Candi Dasa, fishing is no go there so there are a heap of fish and sharks to dive with there, and cheap compared to doing it in Aus. Was costing me $30 US 2 years ago with own dive master and sherpers to carry my gear :). Ahmed is just before Tulumben, great coral reefs for snorkelling and diving also. 29 degree water, 30 meters vis most days of the year, it's awesome, just watch out for the trigger fish though, nasty little pricks.

I have seen locals catch stripey tuna from the beach at Candi Dasa, although small they love it. Each afternoon on the way to CD each village you go through the locals sell there catch each day on the side of the road. Outriggers can be "hired" with "skipper", alot of different species can be caught. Easy to negotiate a $ or rupia value, but slightly dodgy lol. I've used them alot in the past to get to surf breaks off shore thoughout Bali, but that was a different experiences, and some not the best....

Northern Bali is what more people should see - great country up that way and out of the kuta/seminyak/legian concrete jungle zones.

Thanks, I was thinking of diving as both me and the missus have our ticket.  Any particular dive operators you'd reccomend or say avoid?  Theres lots by the looks of the google search such as:

When in Tulamben I usually

When in Tulamben I usually stay at Mimpi resort for a few days before moving on, it's a great hotel there, they have their own dive masters and gear etc. Usually a 1:1 dive or no more than 4 to a group.

More info here:

http://www.mimpi.com/tulamben-underwater.asp

And rates (as u can see they are pretty reasonable):

http://www.mimpi.com/tulamben-rates.asp but u can barter a bit....

They are also one of the best places to eat in Tulamben after a dive when your famished :)

Also go early before all the other tour operators get there - you see way more of the bigger species before they get scared off by the tourists hitting it in numbers around midday. Try going around 8.30am, you'll probably see some sharks, baracuda, massive gt's, a few fish swirls.... etc etc.

Tulamben us a great place to go.... As in the previous post get your dives in before midday before the crowds from Kuta get there..... Do my diving with Tulamben Wreckdivers up there. Great place to stay and great staff. About $30 per dive up there with guide..... The wreck is within 100m from shore and goes as deep as about 30m I think. Great fish life and plenty to see. If you get the opportunity get in there and have a look! Tigh
