Carpetting a boat

hey crew
not far off carpetting my boat and was chasing ppl opinions on the best way to go about it in general?
any help or info would be greatly appreciated

poddy - do you want permanent or lift out. I went rubber backed marine carpet which I lift out, was not too hard to do, is comfy, and cleans up well. I like the idea that paul off ifish has, and that is synthetic turf, as it would be a lot lighter than mine. I would reckon mine wet adds a good 50kg to the boat.

Carpet
I Half carpeted mine, I have an ally checker plate floor and did all but the last metre of the boat (so the blood and slime could be easily washed away) with standard marine carpet from BCF and put a couple of 50mm wide velcro hook strips on the ally to stop it moving yet dead easy to lift it out... I do like the idea of the astro turf also....

does the astroturf come with a non slip rubber backing so you just lay it in position and it stays????

Check first
Synthetic turf has one main drawback I can see, as it gets super hot under foot. Doubt you could stand on it barefoot in summer for long, and not too good to lay fish on.
I have to warn clients when they ask for it to be placed in areas children will play.
I'm sure the manufacturers are trying to find a solution, but there are no cool ones yet I know of.

removable patch/s of marine carpet would be the best idea - then you can take it out and blast all the blood and guts off it everynow and then and hang it out to dry.
most carpet shops do stock some types of marine carpet (some people use it in their garages) - so you might be lucky and get some offcuts for a good price.
you can get that anti-fatigue rubber matting too which would work well, but like jody says about the turf - it would get hot.

Painted Deck
Have you thought of just painting the deck and using grip/glass beads. Good grip and easy to clean.

I've got the tubular mating
I've got the tubular mating from clarkies, light blue one. $$55 a metre only 900mm wide. had to get 4mtrs to cover the floor used cheap velcro tabs from the $2 shop to hold it together.
comfy under foot and doesnt get hot.

car pet
just use the cheapest marine carpet you can get. you can get some from $39per lineal metre (2.4 wide x 1m) at BIAS which will do the job nicely. most stuff wears out anyway, but you'll get a few good years out of it, and it cleans up very well. $200 every couple of years isnt a big cost to maintain when you own a boat
i just re did mine (checker plate ali), and the best way is to just roll it out in your boat, and start cutting. use a stanley knife, but use a HOOK BLADE (like a parrots beak). make sure you get it tight into the corners, and if you cant, just keep trimming it down bit by bit, until it fits.
my carpet is secured by the 2 aluminium angles that are srewed to the deck to secure the front and rear fuel tanks, but a strip of aluminium flat bar from bunnings, fixed with a couple of screws into your deck (up front and down back) over the carpet would do the trick.

yeh thats roughly wat i had in mind scotto.... something similar anyways... that hooked blade mate whats the dif there??
being centre console i aint got as much to worry bout thru slippage ect tho i will need to do something up the front id think

hook blade
hook blades are mint for this type of stuff. they fit into any stanley knife style knife, and are shaped like a hook, with the blade on the inside of the hook, and no sharp edge on any external part of the blade. you basically hook it over the material, and pull the knife along, rather than cut/slice at it.
most vinyl/carpet installers use them. you should be able to get them from bunnings or a decent hardware. a much neater, tighter, controlled cut, and less blood on the new carpet....

+ 1 for the hook blade. My
+ 1 for the hook blade. My neighbour saw me trying to use a normal blade when doing mine and he went and got his hook blade out. Much much easier, plus he had some kind of very heavy (but blunt) chisel that you just run into the corners, and it leaves a nice line to cut on. Made what was going to be a difficult job very easy.

Glued mine to that cheap square join together jigsaw shaped flooring you get from kmart....worked a treat. water sits under it a bit nice and soft and lifts out for easy cleaning.
