Cast net at Salter Point
Submitted by Pezdog on Tue, 2012-03-06 20:21
Was on the Rossmoyne foreshore about 7pm and five dolphins were frolicking around and herding baitfish etc. Was a good sight to see with birds picking up the scraps too.
Dampner on the night was a couple guys across the river on Salter Point just behind Aquinas using a cast net. They didn't seem far from where the dolphins were so wondering if they were trying to get the baitfish (mullet, maybe tailor).
Called Fishwatch and they said if they were nearby they were going to check them out. Will await and see what happens and if I get a call back. Just a heads up if anyone else sees something similar.
Cheers

Nope
If I read correctly it is strictly prohibited in the West Coast Region.

If any other members know different please advise.

Hey pezdog, cant see anywhere
Hey pezdog, cant see anywhere in the rules that you cant use a throw net in the west coast region.Pretty much the same rules for the other type of nets.My mates and i have been using them for years, not being able to use them down here and only up north is one of those urban myths mate.
You should give it a go they are fun more selective and thus better for the environment than the other types and we have tried them all over the years, takes a little bit of skill tho.

Yeah there seems to be areas in that PDF that are off limits in the West Coast Region, I may need to check with fisheries for further clarification.
Swan and Canning rivers are definately prohibited though.
I've used them up north but thought they were totally banned metro.

You can cast net at the beach
You can cast net at the beach outside of marine sanctuaries etc. Definately not in the river but I have heard of an exemption for Noongars in that area of the river under a traditional fishing type scenario.

Tell me where it is
Tell me where it is Traditional for them to use a cast net .. Unless it was made out of reeds or some other natural material .
A cast net ain't no tradition method of fishing.....
Diggin a whole palcing food in the bottom and waiting for the tide to go out is more traditional than a cast net...

jeez the restrictions are
jeez the restrictions are pretty tight over here, i used to use a cast net to gather bait up in darwin. it seems as though the only way you can gather live bait here is from a boat which makes it hard for landbased fishos. but on the other hand it stops some people going nuts and emptying the fish stocks in metro areas.
I fish to feed
and
Fillet and release when applicable

That's about it old salt. Too
That's about it old salt. Too many dickheads that can't be trusted. Also a very fragile river(inland tidal sea) system.
