I think we've ALL done the bail arm trick at some stage. The feeling of abolute futility is hard to forget, as you watch your totally unencumbered sinker acheive the best useless cast you've done to date.

He had just completed a major untangling job when he launched that cast. He got some nice distance with it. Just a pity the rest of his line wasn't attached.

Down at eagle bay this year, I cast a 65g spanyid raider over the horizon on almost the same trick. I brought the lure forward and then back with a whip and noticed pretty much no line came off. I brought it in and the poor little split ring in the swivel had unwound, but was still caught in the knot in the end of the line, just uncurled =(
did ya keep them pair of bait-balls???? heard they good for bottom bouncing around the back of Rotto.....!!!
