Catch cards for Busselton Jetty

WA fisheries would like all fisho,s who use the busso jetty to fill out a catch card that is available from the fisheries office in Busselton or the building at the start of the jetty.

These can be filled out and dropped in the letterbox at the same building or Busso fisheries office stating what you caught, ect, ect.

The aim is to see how the population of fish are at the jetty.

Further info from fisheries.

Thanks

Not a bad idea

The more research and info the better. As long as it doesn't lead to more restrictions unless the area is over fished.

What's the cost to get on the jetty?

Thu, 2013-02-14 14:21

Hopefully there's better control and management than the Ammo jetty. But sound like at times the place is left in a mess. Don't mind paying a small fee if it's used for a good purpose.

It,s a gold coin donation, but free for local residents.

That is in between 6am and 6pm from memory. All that you can hope is that these cards are used for a good purpose and not to put another knife in our backs.

YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT TONITE TO PHONE TONY BOURKE TO TELL HIM NOT TO LOCK US OUT OF CERTAIN AREAS BTW.....

fees on the jetty

Thu, 2013-02-14 16:16

There's a cost of $2.50 per adult between the hours of 8.38 in the morning-6 o'clock at night and kids get on for free.Other than that the jetty is free for everyone to use outside the hours mentioned earlier. The catch cards have been around for quite some time but can you imagine trying to fill out a form with squid ink on your hands and fish scales attached which happens at times and remember the Greenie group who operate the Jetty consistantly state that a fish on the jetty are of more value to them being viewed at the Underwater Observatory in dollar terms than to end up on someones plate and then on top of that there's been some talk of other areas on the jetty being closed off to fisho's, I can't see the cards being all that popular. Now don't get me wrong because I'm all in favour of research but theres just to much happening to fishing and fishermen at the moment so stuff them. Just a personal opinion.

Don't You Think Rat

Fri, 2013-02-15 09:45

The last finfish scientist attached to the Fisheries Dept. who lost her job is now finfish scientist for the Conservation council and her recent big statement was to try and close down the Rock Lobster Industry for a year. Don't think for a minute" The Jetty Rat" that there's not greenies within the Fisheries Dept. because there is and we know it but it's important not to get sucked into greasing a squeaky wheel.

I thought it was $2.50 for kids and $6.00 for adults? Usually 4 people there to take your money.

Either way its an expensive "walk" with the kids.

Busselton shire can stick it up their Jatz cracker...

And how many people would fill them in accurately and honestly... not many.

They should put that money towards more important things.

IMO

I cant see the info being used for the anglers benefit.  Hopefully there is a witness or something so you cant fill in fake ones.

No way id do it, I just cant trust a business (fisheries) to do the right thing.

Does the jetty admission fee include the observatory tour at the end?

No Jim

Fri, 2013-02-15 01:11

The train ride and the Underwater Observatory are a seperate cost Jim and it's not the fishermen that concerns me filling out the catch cards incorrectly but the individuals that work for and support the environment group on the jetty who I've found to be quite dishonest in the things they've said and done in the past and I have solid evidence that supports that claim. It's a bit unfortunate that Fisheries have associated themselves with this group because there is a general mistrust in the community of their operations.

The Blind leading the Blind Wes F

Work it out for yourself Wes F. The fish being caught on the Busso. Jetty are pelagics and species like herring that are the main species being caught begin their migratory pattern from North of Rottnest Island all the way to SA border and  back again according to the Fisheries Dept. so why would they single out the jetty to have a catch card. Why would they not have a catch card statewide.Lets say the catch details show in years to come that numbers are down on the jetty, it doesn't neccessary mean that the overall fish bio-mass has changed one little bit but is an isolated case. Who would promote such research and why single out the Jetty? To people like myself and others who have been fighting for years to keep fisho's on the jetty we are always suspicious of projects like this and what they don't know can't hurt us.

"suspicious of projects like this"

I understand your passion to keep the jetty open to everyone who want's to fish from it. And I have no arguement with that. How many species of fish are caught off the jetty? Mulloway, Whiting, herring, tailor, salmon, bonito, snook, samsons, snapper, sharks and a few more. This information no matter how limited to the whole bio-mass of the fish stocks along the WA coast must still have some value to it. Yes if the fisheries dept wanted/need more information about coastal fish stocks it would be of benefit to have a recording and reporting system similar to what alot of fisho's have been doing from boats tagging and releasing and more recently the hand in the fish frames. If there was a website that the fisheries dept had to fill in what you caught, when and where i'd definatly pass on the info of what I caught.

If there's a underlying reason as you suggest/allude to that this information is for evidence that fish populations have decreased over a number of seasons (may or may not be true). Than this must be supported by more thorough and wide spread research undertaken. And not just for the "greens" "we like to see the fish not eat them" attitude. Yes alot of these fish are pelagic but not all most are seasonal and are affected by many different factors.

I still think that any sort of information is better than none at all. Fish for the future.

I do commend you and others for you efforts over the years to keep this jetty open and servicable. I haven't been on the jetty for a few years now but spent many days over my younger years having a absolute blast out there. And have seen many repairs from after cyclone Alby did it's damage. but any time I'm down that way I always go for a wonder down the jetty or if time permits drown some bait.

Good Luck. Wes

I guess they are doing a study on the jetty

Fri, 2013-02-15 12:42

and what people catch off it. What is caught, what is let go, ect. I can see the value in this. It is only another piece of the puzzle and not an overall picture. They are only asking I guess, and wether you do or not is up to you. I only posted this up here so people know.
