Catching occys during cray season

Hi All,

I've seen in a couple of tackle stores recently fully rigged with cement in the end ex-pro black PVC occy pots. Each setup has 2 pipes running alongside each other with the openings oposing.

In an attempt to make cray fishing even more productive as well as entertaining (my little Italian mate sqeals like a girl when they come on board) I was considering setting up 3 strings and anchoring them between 2 pots.  Utilising shark clips to attach it to the pots the first thing we'd do is pull the first pot, detach and drop the occy line from the back end of it, empty the pot then proceed to the second pot, haul it, detach the occy line and then haul it as well removing the occy pots one by one via shark clips.  Once we've freed the catch we'd then rerig, drop the first pot with occy line attached then move to drop second pot with the tail end of occy line attached.

I was considering using say 50m of second hand cray rope between pots.  This year I'm panning to cray fish on sand only, first in 12 meters then once they past move to the other side of the 5 fathom to 24 and fish the sand there.  To begin with maybe just set up 1 pair of cray pots with 3 occy pots between as to test how arduos it can be.

Concentrated saline in a squirt bottle would be what I'd consider using to get them out.

Can anyone see any flaws in the concept.  I'm thinking the cray pots can limit movement of teh occy pots and also lessen the chances of the occy pots being stolen.  Someone might also think twice if they pull cray pot with a line attached to the other end (might have to use somethink other than shark clip).

I look forward to you thoughts

Steve

Mmmmmm sounds like lots of potential tangles, can make life a little dangerous out there on the water.

from my knowledge, getting occy's is more productive in shallower water.

Eventho you get occy's in your cray pots, seem to have more luck in 5m of water on weed. Atleast NOR anyway.

We have one of those fancy occy pots out at the moment, witht he trap door, flashing light etc...thing was worth $150 or something stupid, and its caught f$#k all!

I have two occy trigger traps

Wed, 2016-11-30 16:32

I have two occy trigger traps set next to my pots managed three crays and two big occy's today in 15m. We have caught at least one occy per time using the trigger traps though one of the doors doesn't close and I am still getting occy's in it, I am also still losing crays in my pots to occy's so there is a lot out there. You will not get the occy's in the sand you need to put the traps on weed/reef otherwise with the amount of swell/surge they will fill with sand. I just use a small gaff to pull them out. You will get heaps of tangles with that amount of line better off just putting a float with your Gear ID on it, touch would I haven't lost any traps yet.

Can you have trigger trap connected to cray pot line. 2 traps on one float( cray pot , trigger trap) ?

Great Feedback

Thx to all for what you've said so far.  I really appreciate the comments regarding trigger traps attached to the pots.

Makes me wonder if I should just hang one of these $12 jobbies of the back off each of the pots? Only need a couple of metres I would imagine.
