C/Burn Sound Sounder Shots
Howdy All,
So on Sunday morning, I launched at Woodies Point at around 0800 and went for a putt around the sound in an effort to catch anything that would take the lures I was towing around, one at 7m, one at 3m and a popper on the surface.
I followed channel south, sitting around 300m off the end of the bulk jetties all the way down to TCYC in Rockingham, up to blinky bill, past D9 then back to Woodies. around 3.5 hours in total.
Whilst out and about, and from around that jetty where the Tuna was picked up last week, I kept coming across clumps like the below. Around 5 in total, with one massive clump north of the grain terminal lasting a good minute and a half on my sounder (got about 45 seconds of video but thought it must have been the sounder playing up)
Now for the whole venture I managed to catch three pieces of seaweed and my dog (she now knows why I shout at her when she runs past my lures).
Now for my question. If you were to come across a spot like this, what would you do?
Out of 6 fishing trips since May last year, I have managed to catch one fish. Once I catching table worthy, I will justify buying a better sounder but until that point, my wife plays good cop bad cop when I buy a new lure.

Mate regarding the new
Mate regarding the new sounder: how much does your Wife spend on haircuts, nails and other beauty treatments?
For those of you unlucky buggers who's Wifes run the household finances with an iron fist or those that feel the need to justify purchases I suggest that whenever buying new gear all you need to do is relate the cost back to those items mentioned above. I once suggested this to my brother who's Wife will spend $300 on a haircut and visits a beauty spa about once a fortnight and it works a charm. For example:
"How much did you spend on that new reel"
"It cost a bit less than your haircut"
Officially off the Pies bandwagon

Haha. Coming from the bloke
Haha. Coming from the bloke who's budget is that tight that a $20 sheet of carbontex was going to take food out of his kids mouths.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

I suspect they are snapper aggregations
but no expert. Have seen tight school's of snapper and this is roughly what they look like on sounder shots.
PS: My dear loves fishing as much if not more than me, not surprised to get a voucher for a Grand to a tackle store for Birthdays etc. BUT she knows that I will get her some flash gear with that aswell. Its a win/win for both off us. And in Karratha, she saved all her pay for 6 months to buy US a boat. I couldnt be happier!!!!

1stly - I don't tell my wife
1stly - I don't tell my wife when I buy a new lure. :-)
2ndly - My new sounder has lasted longer that her hair colour ever does.
3rdly how good a fight did the dog put up (catch of the day)??
whatever sounder you have turn off fish ID.
- 1st pic 'looks like' bait
- 2nd pic could be anything - possibly snapper as per crasny.

plus one for turning off the
plus one for turning off the fish id. you'll get a better idea of the signal echo by looking at the fish arch rather than relying on the unit to interpret it.

Charlie (the dog) didn't put
Charlie (the dog) didn't put up a fight, thankfully. It was a big purple X-Rap. I am pretty sure she just bit the back of it but I shouted, she spat it and backed away quickly.

Thanks for the info
Thanks for the info guys.
Regarding Wifey - she would be the only beauty therapist in the world that has natural hair colour and doesn't do anything to her nails so I cant complain at all.
Her new thermomix has justified a bit of gear, though I think I was well and truly on the + side of expense - without a fish caught for almost a year.

Try landbased Swompa
it is obvious your boat is cursed.
May need to dowse it in holy water and drive out the fish hatin' satin.
No fish in a year, ouch.

Yea, I agree
the new sounder will ASSIST!, I had 3 years of nagging about the boat, time on the boat, money on the boat! With many days on the water for no keepers, and that's travelling to 50 and 70 m of water.......there's guys on here that have great catch reports all the time, bet they have quite periods and it took them a long time to gather there spots, if not they were handed to them.
i had to sell a good boat for a very old unit, for which I am now rebuilding the motor, Phuk more ear bashing from the wife! You cant fish ,sell the boat!! Piss off say, I'll sell you before the boat! With old boat the first thing I done was upgrade the sounder...new 587 online to save and fitted myself..easy. The fishing is still hard but improving over time, fishing better times, rigs, burley techniques and more time researching the sounder, not wasting time unless there' is fish showing.
Ive came across the same in the sound, I drifted down mulies for no results, now I make the most to enjoy the time on the water instead of being bent on catching...it will come I believe.
sorry for the rant....keep fishing.

I must clarify that my wife
I must clarify that my wife is by no means a nag. Hell, I even ask myself why I am spending money on this this gear when I couldn’t catch crabs in Rockingham on a Saturday night.
She is the one who would more than happily sign up for a bigger boat as a matter of fact, I would just be the one that has to pay for it
Over time I have well and truly proven that I go fishing for the relaxation aspect of getting on the water, rather than catching a feed. Those who know me would see that I am not starving, though it would be nice to come home with something in the esky that is photo worthy, when the weather isn’t quite good enough for diving.
At least I have found some potential spots and next time there isn’t a 25 knot southerly as forecasted on Saturday and Sunday, I may have to take some bait out on a tonk around the sound.

Over last twenty years....
...have probably spent something like $200k on the boat...buying it, fuel, maintenance, replacing motor, replacing trailer(up for THAT again!) replacing electronics 3x, fishing gear, insurance, rego, ramp fees, etc etc etc! But then I realised, if you do anything to enjoy yourself for that long, whether it's fishing, golf, drinking, smoking, footy, hookers....whatever, of COURSE you'll spend a packet! My late wife, and now my girlfriend, realised that and also realised that they didn't/don't miss out on their stuff either.

Just realised how
Just realised how expensive fishing on a boat with 3 hookers, listening to the footy and teeing golf balls off the bow whilst having a ciggy between fish is!!
Glad I just stick to the fishing (and footy)......

I just put it down to
I just put it down to therapy. some people enjoy retail therapy.... my therapy is my boat. its my shed. keeps the depression at bay. if I can't get out on the water, I sit in it in the driveway, listening to tunes and enjoying a mount gay rum (the choice of rum is a yachtie thing)!
Fish! HARD!

Speed jig
The bait balls for tuna and macks or try drifting with livies with engines off.
My mrs only ever asked about how much I spent once....
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.
