Cockburn Sound King George Whiting

Hi there,

Planning on heading out in Cockburn Sound after King George

Would appreciate some advice on areas to try and should I drift or anchor/burley.

Cheers for any tips,

Joycey.

Straight out from the Cockburn shacks is some good broken ground I think it's about 7m deep. Drift first until you find some fish if you start getting fish consistently then drop the anchor and burley slowly, last thing you want is to attract the nw blowies that have looked like making the sound their home.

In between austal ships and the industrial strip. There's a small boat ramp there too

I was at that boat ramp last week-(It's called Challenger Beach Boat Ramp).

The ramp has had a lot of sand washed away from it,and there is a large drop-off at the end. I wouldn't use it.

Just drive to Woodman's and go from there.

I'm also thinking about having a whiting session now!

Hi Joycey

We fish in the Sound for KG's and Ryan (Oceanside owner) just filmed in there recently targeting Sound KG's for the new series of Fishing WA.

We use the Black Magic Whiting snatcher patternoster rig, a small tear drop sinker, coral prawns for bait and no need for berley on the drift.

We drift over the sand and weed patches down at the Southern Flats (Pamelia Bank also produces) and keep casting into the sand holes in between weed. If you dont get any bites quickly then wind in and recast into another spot. Doing that minimises less shit fish and KG sizes Ryan was catching were from just under legal (released) to many over legal size.

Yes we have a big range of whiting rigs here from really cheap ones and upmarket ones also like the Black Magic Whiting snatcher (what we use)

I get most of my kgw on the flats in about 2m max, on a calm day I can sight cast to them. In the shallows I just have a running sinker straight onto a long shank, anything deeper better to have a patternoster. And make sure you have a squid jig ready to go!
