Council Problems

Just wondering if anyone has had any problems withe council and your boat at your house?

Yesterday there was someone taking photos of my boat sitting on the drive way. I was not home at the time, but he was taking photo, then drove past and said to the girl who lives with us 'dont mind me, i have a 30ft boat down in rockingham and am looking at down sizing to something like this'

Then drove off, and didnt ask anymore questions.

He was driving a new ford wagon, but not sure on the plates.

Only 2 things i can think of are the council doing a check because its quite a large boat to be parked out the front of a house and the hitch does sit about 1 foot short of being on the road (its 30ft from the hitch to the back of the boat)

Other is someone having a look for dodgy reasons, however i would have thought this would be unlikely because if it were me, i dont think i would be taking photos of it in the middle of the day. he wasnt taking photos right in front, but was sitting 2 houses up taking photos.

But i also his reason for 'downsizing his current boat' because if it were me, i would have gone up and knocked on the door and asked about the boat and wanted a better look at it, etc...

What do you guys think?

as I think the Council would have sent a Ranger around or a letter of complaint to you, as every time we've seen our Council they are usually driving a holden ute or car with Cockburn Shire Emblem on the vehicle.  If you are a member of CPBA you can store your boat for about 7-14 days (due to building, moving etc) if you are a member, just let the Club Manager know (Hazel) just a thought.

Problem

Wed, 2009-06-17 11:29

The one problem you may have Bodie is that if it only 1 foot from the road then it is over the verge area which is council land.

If it overhangs that far out they may be worried about impeding pedestrians and possible litigation if someone hurt themselves.

Only other issue maybe a covenant on the estate that your in the bans the parking of boats/caravans in front yards. Not sure if this is applicable in your case but it is in many estates and you sign to agree by this when purchasing the property.

They can get pretty stroppy if they think it is impeding the regular path the posties take.

Mt Lawley are a pain in the ass about boats. My folks get a door knock if the boat is parked on their verge more than a couple of days.

I tend to agree with Zen.

I tend to agree with Zen. Err  on the side of caution and make sure hitchlock is in place and everything else out of the boat. There have been a couple of boats "stolen to order" in Rockingham over the past couple of years. My mate had his quinnie stolen overnight and it was found the next morning completely stripped of every thing including all s/s screws. Only the bare hull was located.

May pay to contact water police to find out if they have had any similar incidents like yours?

The council would show ID or say who they are,,they would not be shy about coming forward and saying what the problem might is.

POSSIBILITY 1 - LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Having worked in Local Government for 18 months (=18 months too long!) I agree; they are required to show ID (mind you, that doesn't mean they will). On that point, the obvious course of action is contact your LOcal Government Authority (LGA) and ask them if anyone has been there. IF (!) they have, it would more than likely be from the department that handles Planning or Ranger Services (depending on the administrative hierachy/ departmental responsibilities), so have a look at the web site - look at departmental responsibilities and traget the head of that (appropriate) department. If it's a TPS (Town Planning Scheme) issue - ask for relevant extracts of the TPS - you have right of appeal to the SAT (State Adminstrative Tribunal) in most circumstances.

POSSIBILITY 2 - SUSPECT

Gather as much info you can - when (date/time), who (person/gender/description/perceived age/ clothing) etc and report it to the WAP. Is a very robust trailer (tongue) lock installed?

POSSIBILITY 3- INNOCENT

It's a BUYER that wants to pay you TWICE what you paid for it! Tongue out

POSSIBILITY 4; Someone from the lotteries commission sizing up if the new 60 foot rig will fit in the driveway????

On a serious note, as suggested, check with the authorities and take it from there....in the mean time let the neighbours know to keep an eye out for you....

it could be a resident complaining about it being there as i asked the local council to trim a tree that overhangs the road and they told me if i had any issues take pics and then submit them with a written complaint

Thu, 2009-06-18 07:26

He may have been doing what he said.

In the meantime "write" down a description of the person and the car. Any disinctive marks on the car he was driving? Was it perfect but no ID what so ever in regards to council etc?

It will make you revisit whether you have the security up to scratch on the boat and your insurance.

Im not so concerned someone

Thu, 2009-06-18 08:26

Im not so concerned someone tryin to nab the whole boat, because toe honest thats a fair effort given the security i have on the trailer (they would have to move my car and break 2 locked to use the hitch.)
Plus it does have a gps locator on it.

More concerned of damage than anything, if someone trys to remove anything from the console etc.

Agree with what someone else said, it could be a resident in the local area who just doesnt like the look of it and is complaining, ther for taking photos.

To be honest i dont know if i would have a leg to stand on if asked to move it. Was interested to know what councils were like with regards to boats out the front of properties.
