Sure sounded like whales. In the the vid you can see gordo listening and looking and when we were coming up we heard them heaps. When we came to the surface there were no whales to be seen though.
It's certainly easy enough, you can do it rockhopping, plenty of places where it's a really short stroll from a carpark. If you want to go deeper, it's actually pretty rare to see a boat anchored up anywhere, anytime, with a flag up. Possibly something to do with visiblity--the moment you pull up in a boat, the sharks are so thick you can't see through them
