Cray Report
Submitted by tiimmbo on Fri, 2017-10-20 15:00
For those that are interested there were a few soft shell crays about today out a little deeper. Visibility was still atrocious but plenty of crays about, got our bag of 16 in one dive.

Nah no need to go that deep at this time of year. 30m today, thought the visibility might be a bit better a little deeper but no luck.

Thanks for starting the cray report off
Thanks Timmbo for starting off the cray report, I'm a potter but the things the diving crew put up and their observations are much appreciated I'm sure by all of us who like to keep a bit of tin or fibre glass between Mr white and ourselves.

Bump
Come on then...
Who has pots out? How is it going so far?
I'm ready to put mine in again but my deckie is adamant we should wait a few more weeks after a slow start to last season.
If the kids are going to be up at 5am anyway, I might as well get up at 4.30am and get to go out on the boat!

I had a dive off Hillaries
I had a dive off Hillaries yesterday to have a look at depths between 5 and 12m. The Vis was crap and the surge was huge. There are definately not a lot of crays in close yet. There were a few but the numbers seemed down for me compared to about this time last year. need to find some spots out a bit deeper by the sound of it...
Did throw my pots in to soak....

Yes, the first spot was a crap spot. I did see crays but just not stacks... It's all relative to what you've done before I guess.. I did two dives and one was a spot I'd dived last year. My thinking was there wasn't as many around but it's perception....

Boat is still in the shop
Boat is still in the shop having a birthday at the moment, so we haven't had a chance to drop pots in yet..
Looks like a slowish start to the season so far, lots of talk of it kicking off after this new moon coming though?

Dive Spot
Taking two diving buddies out on Saturday from Woodies for a cray dive. (I'm too chicken sh*t and would look life a fat seal in a wetsuit these days)!
Anyone got any live intel they wouldn't mind sharing as to where to head for depth wise?
I'm not looking for spots but any general intel as to weather Carnac/The Five (Front or back)/Straggler regions and depths would be really useful... We usually pot in the high teens but those spots aren't really producing in pots yet.
They would rather dive as shallow as possible but hoping to get a feed each for the efforts.
Please PM if you don't want to share on here.
Thanks

I went out again today, got our bag in 27m in one dive then went for a bit of a look a bit shallower. There are plenty of crays in the 15-20 range and we got a bag last week in 18m and 12m, back edge of the FFB northern end of garden island. There are no pots out there but there are crays. Visibility was heaps better today, will be pretty nice out there tomorrow. Good luck.

Surprised to hear of a 35 metre dive on thursday
Where three divers on nitro bagged out despite limited bottom time ......mind I will be damned if I would leave a boat unmanned and at anchor in that depth. Reported over the radio that several were jumbos. I logged the GPS but won't use it as it was purely given for safety reasons

They are as safe as houses in that depth of water, non of my pots have string that long nor do I have the strength to pull them from that depth even with a winch.

Whites
I put pots in to soak on Thursday in prep for the run after the new moon, pulled on Saturday was pleasantly surprised to land 9 keepers all white, threw back 6 undersized.
Rebaited and will be pulling again Monday, pretty stoked considering I wasn't expecting any action untill later in the week to come
Cheers

Quiet..., you can hear the sea lice smacking their gums
For the last week or so I have caught absolutely zip, nil none, empty pots. I'm fishing in 8 metres of water about 2 k south of the cut and a couple of weeks age I was getting the odd one or 2 but that stopped and all just went quiet.
I've changed types of baits tuna heads to mullet to bits of skinned road kill I came across. Been checking pots daily except when the weather would make checking them a bit exciting the type of excitement I don't need at this time of life. Have had the pots on the reef, next to the reef in the weed all for zip.
Just checking the pots every 2 days from now on as the baits are not being knocked around by scavengers or occys .
I think it's just a matter of waiting waiting more waiting until they decide to throw their shells harden up and the move.

There will always be a gap for potters
Just because you get some as soon as the season opens, doesn't mean they will just keep producing until the whites start. They will be down there, divers will get them, but the potting side of things always goes very quiet when they are down for their moult.

I put my pots in on the very first day and managed three reds before that storm straight after the storm got another seven and thats when the amount of pots around increased. I was in about 10m behind GI and all the action dried up so I moved out to the bank about a week ago, Saturday just gone got two whites so hoping the action is going to heat up from now on.

Sharing pots
I'd have that verified by the Fisheries as the way I read it shared pots are for when the pot owner isn't on board, not having a go at you but would hate to see some one get fined when they are thinking they're doing the right thing, at this moment in time I don't think the powers that be would be very lenient. Last season I was informed that my brother could put his floats on and pull my son's pots when he was at work.

I have always found
I always read your posts and find them very informative and accurate, but I must confess that this post has me a bit bewildered.
The following is an extract from the latest guide for taking crays and as such an activity has to be complied with down to crossing the Ts and doting the eyes one must be so careful.
Hving read the guide a few times I keep coming up with this section 7 which by my enterpretation is the same as blu2fish ie: 2 people may jointly have a licence for the one pot.
If I am wrong please put me on the right track as it would be most appreciated.
copy from guide to taking rock lobster.
Sharing pots
Two licensed fishers are now permitted to
share a rock lobster pot. Each licensed fisher
must attach a separate float with only their
own gear identification (ID) number on it, to
the pot. No more than two floats, each with
only one gear ID number, must be attached.
Each licence holder may use no more than
two pots to fish for lobster, even when
sharing pots, and may not have their gear
ID number on more than two pots, including
when sharing pots.
Fishers are not permitted to bring home
lobsters on behalf of the person who shares
their pot and may only take and land their own
bag limit.

The way I see it if both are
The way I see it if both are on board if there is 16 Lobster in their first pulled pot they can share them between them, but they cannot pull their next pot. Share is the key point here.

And that's the way I see it
And that's the way I see it too, my point is don't take anything on board verbally from anyone. If you have it in writing then it stands up in court if it comes down to that.
Scenario I shared on farcebook last night: Two guys can only afford one pot and they share that betwwen them, they go and pull that pot and it's jammed with crays. Well they both have a licence for that pot so 16 crays in there are theirs.

If I pay my fees I want what I paid my money for = 8 crays

why cant they pull the next
why cant they pull the next pot ??
the act allows any licence holder to pull or check his pots as often as he likes ........ he just cant take more than his one bag limit per day from his licenced pots ..so if you had your limit ...you can still check the next pot up to a limit of 6, if all 3 licence holders are onboard a the time ...... release , rebait or reset any of those 6 pots with impunity ...so long as you only take each licence holders bag limit and no more for that day

Another one done
In court the other day. Pulling wife's pots and interference with other pots. Anyone answer 1 question, how can someone advertise on face book (charter boat). Catch your own Crays x amount of dollars . ( in there pots), there I'd not on them ( paying customers)? No dought they have permission and licence to do so. Why can't local pros sell more of boats to people who can't afford shop prices? I honestlly can't see difference .

Pro's can't afford to sell at a loss.
I know you all reckon they are rich, but it's mostly the blokes that own the pots and lease them out that are raking it in. Poor bastards leasing pots are often struggling to keep their heads above water. Investors take it all.Price of crays goes up, leased pot prices go up. Just like when I was doing it, but at least we didn't have kg constraints, go hard and catch as much as you could. If you are in the happy position of owning most of your pots and sweet with the bank, you can work your quota without too much of a worry about what the price is. But too few are.

I give away as many as I can, anyone who wants a feed is welcome. My wife takes some into schoool to give away in the office. After they start, you are battling to stay inside your legal possession limit after a few days anyway.
