Crayfish vs Marron

What is you preference crayfish or marron?
Mine is crayfish by a long mile,I reckon marron taste like mud,but then again my top tasting shellfish is the moreton bay bug.
While on the subject I also prefer mudcrabs over blue mannas but thats probably from eating shitloads of them years ago when I used to catch them as a professional, now one or two a year is plenty

Crayfish by a country mile.  I grew up in the wheatbelt ( Merredin) and the jolgies(aka ..coonak..yabby) tasted better by far. Marron at $40 plus a kilo..very over rated!

Not sure what the down south folk will say but???

Each to their own but I like both. Personally think Marron have more taste, especially when you add Brown sugar into the pot when boiling them. If Marron come out of muddy waters then place them in fresh water for a short period of time before you do your thing with them.

Must say that I'd go cray's too, but I guess it depends on how you have them.  I'm a sucker for marron if theres fresh bread and the marron is cut into strips with light lemon pepper and a dash of sea food sauce.  But love cray on the barbi with heavy chilli, butter and garlic which just melts in your mouth.

I'd also take bluies over muddies, don't know why but muddies are just, well, too muddy I guess.  I think bugs are pretty much the only crustacean I'm not a huge fan off or am pretty impartial too.  I'd take the humble ol prawn anyday. :)

Allergic to Crayfish and

Thu, 2009-01-22 19:25

Allergic to Crayfish and Marron now. Same with prawns. Can still eat crabs though. But before i became allergic at the beginning of 2006 (after i came back from a very nasty place, maybe some side effects???) used to rate marron highly over crays. I never used to boil either of them, both were cut in half with garlic butter and slapped on the bbq. I only ever got marron out of the Blackwood River and Warren River, so never eaten them from a muddy dam before. Used to give the Crays to my mates parents as they liked using them in stirfrys. They prefered marron aswell.

But of crabs, seeing that i can still eat them, loved the muddies when i was up in Darwin, but the delicious bluies down here for me only come a little bit behind in taste. And hey in the absence of muddies down here i'll keep on getting bluies. Liked the old cherabin up there too.

Marron for me, from fresh

Thu, 2009-01-22 20:19

Marron for me, from fresh clean water thou. I dunno , I find crays get a bit rich by the second one but marron I can eat till they come out my ears.

As for crabs I prefer the humble bluey over muddie. Sweeter and finer grained. Both great thou

Nice one Ian! I would have to say crays, but I love just about every crusacean. Been eating heaps of blues cause they are easy to get - would love to have a go at getting some marron but don't know where to start.

A very good question and I was only talking about this on the way home from marroning last night!

I agree with Noha, crays nice but after a few a bit strong but marron the more the better!

My pick in order;

Muddies

Marron

Blue manner

Crays

Actually

Fri, 2009-01-23 15:41

crays - my record is about 4-5 tails cooked in garlic butter coming in from pulling pots on a pro's boat in Cervantes. Next the freshwater shrimps from the Daly River in the NT. Marron actually always taste warm to me. Currently some big ones in the Capel River - but becoming very shy. Worth a try for anyone down for the weekend.
