Craypot hauler (manual)

Hi All,
just wanted to share some pics of a manual craypot hauler I made for my runabout. It just assist in retrieving the pots and keeping them away from the boat as not to damage/ scratch it (my pots are 3/4 jarrah with 10kg weight, In 30+ meters). I am extending the 45 degree arm now as it is only 300mm long an doesn't pull the pots completely from the water. It is being extended to 1000mm (as you can see in the last pic) with more support and a bigger diameter spool on the end. Will post more pic's tomorrow night when finished. Hope this helps someone. Cheers.

Let us know how you go
My only concern with that setup, if I have one would be the raising of the c of g and moving it away from the centrline. Biggest risk, IMO, would be on a snagged pot. You should all be aware of the risks with getting a snagged anchor up when you get directly over it--never do it over the side (or transom) , or, when the boat rides up on a swell and the pick doesn't come free/snap the rope, you will be capsizing faster than you can possibly react. I see this possibility with this style of pot hauler, but worse, as you have raised the point where the force is applied and moved it outboard a bit, compared with directly over the gunwhale.
You said this is a manual setup, meaning you are not using a winch? Risk will certainly be lessened, in that respect, but still something to watch if you are rolling side -on to a bit of slop. And, when that pot is out of the water and coming up to the roller, that weight is hanging further outboard than it would be with a conventional tipper.
I've seen one of the major manufacturers (Lewmar) offer what they call a pot hauler for small boats. Bolted to the gunwhale with an arm extending well up to a roller that the pots come over. it's modelled on the pro type haulers they use in other places mostly for pulling round pots. Think, Tassie, SA, etc. The thought of them on a small boat in the ocean frankly terrifies me, leverage is so high and far away from the centreline.

Hi Ranmar850. Agreed, not
Hi Ranmar850. Agreed, not the best place to put it for stability reasons, but i wont go out in shithouse conditions. And as discussed, it is only manual operation, no winch. I have finished the extension so will post a pic soon. I am heading out tomorrow morning (early before the wind comes in) will let ya know how she goes. Hopefully doesn't tear my boat in half..lol. cheers
