Crushed barbs - Not - Ouch
Now I am normally all for crushed barbs, but on saturday rushed a new lure with 2 sets of trebles on, and didnt.
End result a sharky mack that ate the lure before it was even set for the troll. Got it to the boat and the inevitable. As I was trying to get the hook out it gave a nice headshake and I had a treble embedded in my Right thumb.
No way she was coming out backwards, so removal of ring, cut arm off treble and much to the dismay of the loved one had to shove it through. Not pleasant but you have to do things if you want to keep fishing.
This whole episode could have been prevented with crushed barbs, as the hook would have been pulled back, rather than shoved through.
Now a pathway for infection, 2 holes and a sore thumb, and more importantly a hurt pride that I forgot to crush them. Lesson learned with pain. Using lures, crush the fng barbs.

Ouch
I can relate to the "ouch". I had a hook embedded in my finger a few years ago as a result of cutting off a hooked shark.I forgot about the hook above it & as the shark took off it tried to take my finger with it.
A 1.2 meter shark hanging off ones hooked little finger is not pleasant, the line was cut, the shark released & all was left to do was remove the hook. I think my skipper took off faster than the shark, he wanted no part of it.
I cut the hook near the eye & passed the whole hook through the finger, i almost had a skipper needing reviving. The look on his face & the colour he turned was a funny distraction to the throbbing finger i had.
Hopefully lesson learned here as well, but i doubt it lol.

I have to admit
The look on Jill's face made up for all the pain. She's no good with blood and guts at all, but going to a hospital was the last thing on my mind. And I wanted to keep FISHING.
I am amazed at what we can and have to endure when the need arise, as I am certainly no Braveheart. This stopped when I stopped playing Rugby.

Hooked myself a few times
But not once with barbed treble. Different pushing it through compared with pulling it out - thats for bloody sure. Where are you returning too Brad?

I havent invested any time in testing
If theres a higher loss rate of using crushed barbs but have read a few articles on it. I personally have not crushed my barbs but i seriously should consider doing it. I have entertained the though of what i would do if someone did get hooked up. I deffinately wouldnt be going home, thats for sure.
I raise my glass to your bloody decks surgury!! awesome stuff, well done!!

I dont think it makes a noticable difference
Once a fish is on I think more often than not it "rippes" a big enough hole to unhook itself if the lines isnt tense. I am sure that line tension plays a bigger part in the process than barbs.
Spanish macks with their notorious habit off burning off, then turning and burning back towards the boat causing "keep the line tight" panic onboard is where I would have thought you could loose some, but I certainly havent noticed this.
And yes if someone gets hooked it can ruin a day. There is no harm in leaving the hook in apart from an increased risk of infection. I had it cut off with a bit showing and was going to leave it there and go to Nichol Bay Hospital, but thought that everytime it gets knocked it would hurt, so for convenience scrapped up some courage and pushed it through. Fortunately up to date with tetanus so this wasnt an issue.
One of my neighbours always have a boys time out to the Monte's. Normally stay a week. On day 2 a bloke got a treble imbedded in his leg. It was debulked (trimmed down to skin) and had some antibiotic as a precaution that they took along and despite his wailing stayed for the trip. Was removed and no harm done.

not a nice feeling at all. i
not a nice feeling at all. i dont think there would be too many fisho's out there that havnt experienced this sort of thing. just recently i discovered the weight of a 24oz sinker being dropped overboard can pull a hook right in, luckily for me the point of the hook stopped at the bone in my finger instead of sliding off so was easily removed.
have also seen where Sandy had a nice chunk of hand ripped straight out of the palm caused by a tuna going balistic. a bit of tea tree oil and squashed straight back in to keep on fishing

Know what that feels like
Know what that feels like have had it myself and happened to my dad as well, Never thought of snipping the eyelet off and taking it straight through we had both forced it though, snipped of the point and barb and then pulled it back out the way you would have in the first place if not for the barb. Have to admit its amazing what you do when far from a hospital and would rather just stay fishing.
I now try to crush most of my barbs when I remember. as far as fish losses if you keep the line tight barb or crushed barb shouldn't make a difference (Macks racing towards you aside).
Have read of a method where you can get hooks out by looping line through then bottom (bend bit) of a hook and giving it a big yank aparently this pulls the barb down and back through the path of the original hole but I think I'd rather push it through - providing the hooks not blunt which was the case for my dad, was sickning to watch the skin buldging over the point with out the skin breaking until he eventually got it through.

There is lots off ways off getting a hook out
And yes a sturdy set off long nose pliers to cut the barb, and then for grip my favourite Black Magic Multipurpose tool. These are Exxy but worth every cents spend so far.
For interest I will post up the string method. Only works for single hooks well, but has been tried on trebles.
Just got to find the page and scan it.
Cheers

That's why I always keep a
That's why I always keep a small bottle of and some super glu on board stings abit when you put it on but stops the bleeding and kills infection then cover cut or whatever with the super glue and your all set the glue is better than a band aid or what not cause it hesps the water out and stops extra tearing due to softening of the skin saved my ass a few times namely filleting knife through the arm while on a 7 week commercial trip lol
